He's An Impostor, The Navy Says About Cap'n Crunch

We don't know how, but we missed a major scandal brewing in the Navy for decades. It's important, so even if we're a little late to the story we still wanted to point it out: Cap'n Crunch is an impostor.

The Cap'n , who noticed the uniform he wears on cereal boxes had the stripes of a commander, not a captain. That is: A captain has four stripes on his sleeve, while a commander has three.

As the story spread, the Navy confirmed what you might be fearing: Cap'n Crunch is a fraud, tricking innocent children since his introduction in 1963.

The Navy (paywall):

" 'You are correct that Cap'n Crunch appears to be wearing the rank of a U.S. Navy commander,' Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Flaherty, a U.S. Navy spokeswoman, tells Foreign Policy. 'Oddly, our personnel records do not show a "Cap'n Crunch" who currently serves or has served in the Navy.' "

What's more: We put our investigative reporter hat on and went digging. We pulled up and they showed that on some occasions he sported one stripe, on others two.

just wait until cap’n crunch comes out of the closet, and the navy (under pressure from the obamites) promotes him to admiral.

The mind wobbles at how funny and "unfunny" this comment really is.

True!

In addition Captains (select) are Commanders who have been promoted with the promotion scheduled for a future date. During the period between when the promotion is announced and when it actually occurs the Commander is called Captain (select) or just Captain for ease of use.

The good Capt crunch likely had a clerical error in his file which inadvertantly made his (select) period in the 2050s instead of the 1950s or thereabouts making him the longest serving (select) in Naval History - and thereby quite salty.

Being salty is also often referred to as being crusty, and as everyone knows crusty is just downright crunchy obtaining him his follow on sobriquet.

A captain has four stripes on his sleeve, while a commander has three.

And a cartoonist somewhere, maybe even long dead, is thinking "I wondered how long it would take them to catch on..."

Don’t they now have a Command Master Chief rank?

“A cartoon character for a brand of cereal is an imposter? You mean he’s not really a captain? You don’t say.”

If Beverly Crusher and Counselor Troi can be Starfleet commanders then a cartoon character can be a captain.

Isn’t the officer in charge of a ship ALWAYS called the Captain, regardless of his rank?

But he's The Captain, or captain of the ..... . If his actual name is used it must be with his official rank.

You mean...King Vitamin...isn't really a...???

As mentioned, Cap'n Crunch may not be a USN-certified Captain. But he's certainly the captain of his ship, the S.S. Guppy. At the least, he is her Master and Commander.
