Why The August Recess Should Scare Immigration Reform Backers: GOP worried about town hall protests
National Journal ^ | June 24, 2013 | Reid Wilson

Immigration reform-backing Republicans are concerned that town hall protests could derail support for the immigration legislation.

Advocates of immigration reform, who once hoped to have a bill on President Obama's desk before Congress leaves for their annual August recess, should be nervously checking the calendar. If the House and Senate adjourn before a bill is finished, members will begin feeling pressure, especially from conservative critics who think the bill amounts to little more than amnesty.

Immigration reform backers need only recall four years ago, when the August recess gave rise to scenes of angry protests at town hall meetings across the country, protests that effectively ended any hope Democrats had of winning Republican support for comprehensive health care reform.

Six months into Obama's first term in office, Democrats held out hope that they could fashion a bipartisan agreement on health care reform. Sen. Max Baucus, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was working closely with Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee's ranking member. Obama himself was assiduously wooing Sen. Olympia Snowe, who seemed open to reform. And White House officials believed they could find areas of common ground with dozens of Republicans in the House to form a truly bipartisan set of reforms.

Then came August, when conservative protesters who affiliated themselves with the nascent Tea Party movement descended upon town hall meetings held by members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. Democrats were on the defensive while Republicans, who might have once considered supporting a compromise, realized the level of anger their base felt over the bill.....

Why?
1. So as not to pi$$ off hispanics more than necessary.
2. Real reform is necessary (but not the Senate Bill) because we now have de facto amnesty, e.g., no deportation, welfare going to illegals.

1. Hispanic CITIZENS are rather pissed at illegals. In any case, the mythical “Hispanic vote” wouldn’t have won us the election anyway.

2. We HAD reform in 2006. President Jugears merely refuses to enforce EXISTING law. . .

Don’t disagree. However, the issue is not current hispanic citizens, but the future ones. As long as we give the children of illegals automatic citizenship, that is an issue.
Exactly right on #2, but nothing to be done short of impeachment.

I wish I could scream the following from roof top’s, but do not seem to have the ability to make it widely known; “If you control the dialogue, you control the issue”.

RINO’s and libs control gained control of the issue when they, unchallenged - merged the invasion of our southern border into an immigration issue! Understand that, and we can understand how Americans have been duped. THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT IMMIGRATION, but now Obama and his predecessors, ignoring their few actual Constitutional mandates - protecting the USA borders - is magically legitimized as feel good political dogma.

For conservatives to regain the issue, we MUST regain the dialogue! This is ONLY about America being invaded by a foreign country; Mexico. Resolve this invasion alone! If people wish to tweak our immigration policy, then do so separately. Immigration is important - but totally unrelated to what’s happening on our sothern borders!

DESTROY THE COUNTRY, JUST SO WE CAN SAY “I TOLD YOU SO”?

NO THANK YOU!

One month here, eh?

I have to disagree with BOTH of you even though you two both disagreed with each other.

1) letting a amnesty bill pass out of House makes millions of new Dem voters as new citizens, so I dont see how that punishes Dems. Its win-win for them, a disaster for us. Dem voters will just blame the GOP if amnesty is passed and goes bad,

2) The house GOP doing ‘nothing’ doesn't mean that nothing gets passed. Twice this year the House GOPs couldn't agree on their own bill so Bohner just put up the Dem Senate bill up for a House vote and got it Obama’s desk.

So the House creating mini-bills that violates the Senate's evil agreements in their massive bill seems like the worst of the evils.

RE :”One month here, eh?”

LOL, One month here and he suggests that we beat Dems by giving them what they want, millions of new Dem voters.

that's OK, I always say the place gets boring if everyone agrees. More fun to have a live one from time to time.
Like my family's Tomcat catching mice.

“DESTROY THE COUNTRY, JUST SO WE CAN SAY “I TOLD YOU SO”?

Rand Paul put forth the idea on taxes, saying let the Senate dims raise them and then own the outcome. It’s Kissinger-esque but the dims play the same game. They want real reform to fail so they can have a political attack talking point to hit the GOP with in 2016. We can do the same, pass a bill and then flog them with it.

Guys like Mickey Kaus on the left even don’t want this amnesty. Dims have overreached to appease La Raza, they are hoping this fails so they can start blaming the GOP.

Losing the battle to win the war! It’s really the only political argument for this bill at this point.

Bad idea, there will be no undoing it and Aztlan will no longer be just a dream.

And?

There were all kinds of angry Town Halls against Obamacare.

And most of those incumbents easily won re-election.

Why would they care now?

If I were a liberal living in Washington, I’d be wiping my ass with everyone too.

Obama has already ordered a back door amnesty for the “Dreamers.” Nary a peep came from the Reps. Essentially 1.8 million have had their status legalized and given work permits.
