Alternate headline: “He’s running.”
No, seriously, though. As strange as it seems, I think he might honestly oppose legalizing SSM.
He blasted the U.S. Supremes for substituting their own judgment for the judgment of a Republican Congress and a Democratic President. In the Republican Congress in the 90s and Bill Clinton. I thought that Justice Kennedys opinion was, in many respects, incredibly insulting to those people, 340-some members of Congress who voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, and Bill Clinton.
He basically said that the only reason to pass that bill was to demean people. Thats heck of a thing to say about Bill Clinton and about the Republican Congress back in the 90s. And its just another example of judicial supremacy, rather than having the government run by the people we actually vote for, said Christie, who recently appeared with Clinton at a Clinton Global Initiative conference…
Youre talking about changing an institution thats over 2,000 years old. Seems to me that, you know the Democrats are putting an increase to the minimum wage on the ballot, Christie said, noting Democratic opposition to a referendum. Thats important enough to put on the ballot. But gay marriage is not. Thats something the people should decide, but not whether same-sex marriage should happen in New Jersey.
He does know that his new buddy Bill applauded yesterday’s decision, right?
Why do I think he might be on the level in opposing gay marriage? Because, at this point, I don’t see what he gains by holding that position if he isn’t. It doesn’t help him win more votes in Jersey. It doesn’t help him with an independent candidacy in 2016, which would be aimed at fiscal conservatives and social moderates. He’s burned so many bridges with conservatives that I don’t see how it helps him running as a Republican either, even in social conservative strongholds like Iowa. Does anyone see anti-gun, Obama-hugging Chris Christie winning the caucuses against more outspoken social cons like Santorum, Rubio, and maybe Huckabee, notwithstanding his opposition to SSM? The best I can do to come up with a theory for why he might be posing this way politically is that, if he does somehow win the GOP nomination, being on record against gay marriage will reduce the risk of social conservatives staying home.
But that’s assuming that people believe him. Christie’s problem here is that both culturally, as a northeastern Republican, and politically, by virtue of his many recent antagonisms with the right, his conservative bona fides is suspect. It’s like Obama pretending to be against gay marriage in 2008; a few dummies did believe that, but if you looked at the rest of O’s politics and his cultural identity as an Ivory Tower liberal intellectual, it was simply insane to think that he could sincerely oppose SSM. Christie’s political and cultural identity is different, but normally someone who favors gun control, believes in man-made global warming, and wants to expand Medicaid under ObamaCare is a safe bet not to be a hardliner on gay marriage. (And in fact, while Christie’s vetoed a gay-marriage bill before, he supports civil unions and has invited the public to pass a gay-marriage referendum if they really want to see change.) If he was in the business of taking phony positions on issues that might instantly disqualify him with lots of conservatives, we would have never seen headlines like this, would we?
Christie is free to say anything he wishes now that the Supremes have already ruled this depravity into law. He’s trying to gain back a little street cred with conservatives so he’ll be ready to run with Rubio with roves’ blessings.
A little one on one “facetime” with Bathhouse Barry will get his singing “Over the rainbow”.
It’s time for conservatives to put up and shut up in 2016. We’ve had nothing but RINOS get the nomination since 1988 and let’s be honest conservatives haven’t done enough to win, and it’s time to stop whining about the moderates.
>> Hes trying to gain back a little street cred
Yep, he’s a calculating SOB (but still an SOB).
his = him
Physically, mentally, philosophically and politically.
Christie can do no good with some on Free Republic. He is my Governor and while I am not a big fan of his, I do give him credit where credit is due. I guess if you have not been exposed to the guy in the past you might be liable to think that he is triangulating and posturing on this issue but the fact is that he has always held this position despite incredible pressure to change.
Christie’s positions on many issues stink but on this one he is sincere and alot more gutsy than many other so called Conservatives who either folded or are keeping their mouths shut for fear of political backlash.
Yeah, He is amazing.
A bunch of freepers falsely calling him "pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage social liberal!" from the moment he ran for Governor didn't change that. It would be like me calling Jeff Flake a "gun grabber" because his open borders position sucks. You want to expose Flake's horrible record on illlegals, go ahead. You want to make up stuff, you're only hurting our side.
Christie is a bloated, self-serving RINO. He can run - for office or for exercise, but neither one is going to get him very far.
Christie is a fake, phony fraud.
You mean he really is for same-sex marriage?
He’s for Chris Christie, nothing else, and he should stop trying to sound like a conservative. He doesn’t carry it off any better than Etch A Sketch did.
I can’t speak about other issues...
But perhaps on this one issue, he really is for state rights.
After all on the issue of gay marriage in NJ, he actually FOUGHT the legislature and VETOED a bill to make it legal.
Just today, he said if presented to him a second time, he would veto it again.

Feigned outrage. Pretty easy to hide behind his skirt, when the deed is done.
Thanks for the warning shots after the battle is over, Fat-So.
Where were you when it counted?
Christie is a unique political animal. Usually in the northeast we get republicans who are very left on the social issues, but he’s pretty firmly on the right on life issues and now marriage. He clearly has other weaknesses, but I’d find it interesting that he’s gotten to be governor (and likely 2 terms ), and his social stances have not been an issue at all.
It’s because these issues (e.g. abortion and gay marriage ) are NOT in most of the NJ people’s priority list. It’s JOBS, the ECONOMY, the looming pension meltdown, crime that’s on the top of people’s minds.
