It’s simple - Democrats/liberals believe that everyone needs government coercion because people are too stupid to make their own choices. Segregation was government enforced discrimination. Affirmative action is government enforced discrimination.
That “mismatch” he describes is spot-on, and carries over into the employment sector. Many blacks are pre-destined to fail (in school or work) because they’ve been put into a position one spot above their qualifications (for diversity purposes).

Liberals embrace affirmative action precisely because it is group oriented and racist. Republicans rather naively implemented programs in an effort to stop Democrat leftist racism; but the leftists turned these programs around to do the opposite.
Republicans always underestimate the determination of leftist racists, who have now reached the point that enslavement and impoverishment of minorities are not enough—though they support that—but now they strive to exterminate them entirely.
In the ultra-violent movie Django Unchained, the slave owning villain, Calvin Candie, was a remarkable impression of many Democrats then and now. More accurately, he was what Democrats *want* to be.
At the time, were a journalist to interview him, he would have likely said that he was doing this for his slaves own good, and that northern Republicans were being cruel and hateful to the slaves by threatening them with freedom.
This analogy is not far fetched. The southern slavery apologist George Fitzhugh wrote in his book “Cannibals All!: Or, Slaves Without Masters”, that slavery was a social good, and so good that 9 out of every 10 persons should be slaves.

Back when I was in high school, in the 1970s, I read an op-ed piece written by a black person who was absolutely against affirmative action and quotas. At that time, being young and raised in a very liberal family, I couldn’t understand the objections. “Doesn’t he understand that quotas are their to help him?” I remember thinking.
Now I understand.
I think the reasons for supporting affirmative action are complex. Since affirmative action is implemented by admitting kids into colleges and universities despite their lack of academic qualifications, it reflects a base assumption that minorities (blacks and hispanics) are incapable (too stupid) to be able to compete using the same standards. It reinforces the stereotype of certain minorities being less intelligent than whites or asians. Furthermore, substituting lowered standards for expectations of academic excellence relieves the education establishment of having to fix the real problems in K-12 education that cause kids to graduate unprepared for college. It also absolves anyone of any responsibility for stamping out the “Uncle Tom” culture that is so prevalent among many minorities—the culture of punishing successful minorities because success makes them “too white.” We need to get rid of affirmative action and focus on the problems that prevent minorities from preparing for college.
Because it enslaves more folks to be dependent on the government and to vote Democrat.
