Jesse Jackson Jr. is receiving Social Security, federal retirement system payments ($8.7K/mo.)

His age and his tenure in Congress — almost 17 years — are short of the mark for a standard retirement annuity from the Federal Employees Retirement System, or FERS. Members of Congress can collect a pension from FERS starting at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after 25 years of service, according to the Congressional Research Service.

But Jackson appears eligible for another FERS program that pays out "disability retirement" payments.

Under program rules, potential payments in the first year would total $8,700 a month — or $104,400 a year. The potential payments would drop to $69,600 annually in subsequent years.

Any payments are subject to income taxes, according to officials at the federal Office of Personnel Management. Citing privacy rules, OPM officials would not talk about Jackson Jr. but provided general information about FERS benefits.

Under the rules, whatever FERS "disability retirement" benefits a lawmaker receives are adjusted downward if he or she begins collecting Security Social disability payments.

No pensions for any elected officials, period! Nor for politically appointed officials. And I’m not so sure civil service workers should get pensions either; certainly not tax-payer funded ones to which they do not have to contribute out of their own pay.

People in Chicago are so thrilled that Jr. will be taken care of; they don’t understand that it is the “little man” paying for some of this.

Supposedly Bipolar

Jackson Jr., who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, argued Monday in papers filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that the memorandum will contain “personal, sensitive details about his medical condition” and that parts of it should be withheld from the public’s view. He also said details of an unspecified relative’s medical condition should be withheld from public view.

His lawyers said releasing the memorandum in full would “disclose unnecessarily the defendant’s and his family member’s medical information, diagnoses and treatment to the public.”

Follow-up question: Will the payments end if he gets sent to prison?

“disabled for useful and efficient service “

This should mean that the person, on social security criteria, is totally and permanently disabled. If ill, he is confinded to his home, hospital and extremely sedentary.

If injured, he is confined to bed or cannot ambulate at all.

I contend that a member of congress can work from a wheelchair. I contend that a member of congress with his faculties can work.

If this man purports to be mentally ill, what is the illness? In this day and age, with the medications we have, why can’t he work/

LASTLY WHO IS THE DOCTOR OR DOCTORS THAT HAVE SAID IN WRITING THAT THE MAN IS DISABLED. SEND HIM TO MY CLINIC. I’LL ASSESS HIM FREE OF CHARGE.

Incurable biploar disease? Have him assessed by an independent medical evaluator. Doctors to not keep people from work with bipolar disease on a long term basis, unless these people are unable to care for themselves. It would be rare to have someone not responding to meds and other therapies.

I am sure the man is depressed etc...but the physicians who keep him from returning to a productive state in society are doing the man a disservice.

Get back to work. I will help you. Staying off work will only make you work.

OH AND ONE MORE THING. MOST DISABILITY PAYMENTS ARE GIVEN ON THE BASIS THAT THE PERSON DOES NOT RECEIVE OTHER REVENUE FROM WORKING, EG OVERSEEING A FAMILY BUSINESS ETC.

So, Jesse, incase you’re thinking of writing your memoirs for financial gain, think twice as that would constitute a reason to stop your benefits. (you need to pay tax on the money you receive by the way.)

In order to qualify for SS, you have to spend “x” amount of days in the loony bin. His handlers know this, and that’s why he did it.

All kids & immigrants have to learn is how to scam the system.

At yours & my expense, the bastards.

I suggest the following rules for Congress critters:

1) Eliminate the federal pension benefits. Let them fund their own IRA’s and 401K’s like the rest of us.
2) Prohibit conversion of campaign funds to personal funds when the representative leaves office.
3) Prohibit the hiring of relatives for campaign staffs or office staffs.
4) No spouse, parent, or offspring of a representative can work as a contractor for government, a lobbying firm, or any organization receiving government funds.
5) No representative can be employed as a lobbyist, or work for any non-profit organization receiving any government funds, for a period of 5 years after leaving office.
5) Health care benefits will be Obamacare. Same as the citizens. No treatment of Congressmen at military hospitals (except veterans).
6) Congress must hold a recorded role call vote each term establishing pay for the next term. No more automatic pay increases.
7) Representatives, family members, and staffs cannot accept any gifts or gratuities from foreign nations, individuals or organizations. This includes flying on corporate airplanes, meals, hotel rooms at conferences.
8) Representatives cannot earn outside income from giving speeches, selling books, personal appearances or appearing in the media.
9) While in Congress representatives must post their complete federal and state tax returns, for the period they have been in office, on their websites so citizens can review their sources of income.
