Greenwald on ‘coming’ leak: NSA can obtain one billion cell phone calls a day, store them and listen
RT ^ | June 29, 2013

The NSA has a “brand new” technology that enables one billion cell phone calls a day to be redirected into its data hoards and stored, according to the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald, who said that a new leak of Snowden’s documents was ‘coming soon.’

Calling it part of a “globalized system to destroy all privacy,” and the enduring creation of a climate of fear, Greenwald outlined the capabilities of the NSA to store every single call while having“the capability to listen to them at any time,” while speaking via Skype to the Socialism Conference in Chicago, on Friday.

Greenwald was the first journalist to leak Snowden’s documents, having travelled to Hong Kong to review them prior to exposure.

“What we’re really talking about here is a globalized system that prevents any form of electronic communication from taking place without its being stored and monitored by the National Security Agency,” he said.

While he underlined that the NSA are not necessarily listening in on the full billion calls, he pointed out their capability to do so and the lack of accountability with “virtually no safeguards” which the NSA were being held to.

The Guardian journalist made hints that he was sitting on further details of the NSA’s billion-call backlog, which he’d keep under wraps until the documents full publication, which he said was “coming soon.”

He additionally suggested future exposures to come from Snowden, while lauding the sheer risk the whistleblower took in revealing the NSA’s covert surveillance program.

Who would dare question any “evidence” the “an essay” finds in its files?

You mean all those NSA officials lied to Congress? Shocking. Throw them all in jail.

“Climate of Fear”

… “One of the things that has been most disturbing over the past three to four years has been this climate of fear that has emerged in exactly the circles that are supposed to challenge the government…the real investigative journalists who are at these outlets who do real reporting are petrified of the US government now

Greenwald is ‘real’ liberal. Throw in he is gay, and dislikes big brother.

Like that one. Don’t want to be on your list. In fact, if you put me on your list I will defenestrate you faster than you can say “All hail god-king Obama!” But I do like that image.

This last week, Leno had on Wanda Sykes (iirc, she’s the “husband” half to her extra special other) who apparently used to work at NSA. They never said if she was the janitor or what but she was obviously on Leno specifically to down play the NSA scandal. She was so snarky about conspiracy theories and how stupid people are who think the government cared enough about your email to waste its time reading them. Her guest appearance was glaringly staged.

Recently, Brewster Kahle estimated (blog post, worksheet) that it would cost "only $27M in capital cost, and $2M in electricity and take less than 5,000 square feet of space to store and process all US phonecalls made in a year." That's spare change in NSA's budget.

Brewster Kahle knows a little bit about storing large amounts of data. He's the guy behind the Wayback Machine.

He assumed 300 minutes per person per month, amounting to 272 petabytes a year, costing $100k per petabyte/year for disk storage (the rate the Wayback Machine pays). That seems close. A year and half ago, I bought a 2-terabyte external drive for $200 at the Apple Store. You'd need 500 such drives to store a petabyte.

Why the NSA put a data center in Utah

1.5 million square feet of supercomputers designed to store massive amounts of information secretly obtained from (wherever they choose to stick their proctological probe).

That’s a damn good question. Zimmerman’s defense lawyers should subpoena the records. We KNOW the NSA has it stored somewhere.

Truthfully, we volunteered for this. When the internet came on we all wanted on it. And now we’re really on it. Google yourself and ask yourself “Who put my info on the internet?”. When cells phones ALL OF A SUDDEN became affordable, we all wanted at least one. And we’ve been “upgrading” ever since and “putting” cameras all over the place. We are now all PERSONS OF INTEREST.

I dislike Big Brother too, so that’s enough in common for me.

If we have freedom we can debate the conservative v liberal stuff. Without freedom, all either one of us can do is either bow or die.

The key thing to remember is that a scoop this large overwhelms the people who have to sort it for what is useful. Computer programs can do some of the sorting, but it always ends up with the human factor limiting what can be actually looked at. the one thing we dealt with when I was in the Army 20+ years ago, was that we were getting more information than we could process and turn into useful intelligence products for the commander.

For example, some of the main messages used by folks who say the US new exactly what the Japanese were doing on the way to Pearl Harbor, were actually decoded many months and even 2 years after Dec 7, 1941. why? The US Army and Navy did not have enough people to break the codes of all the messages that our radio intercept people were copying down.

Of course, the size of the scooper makes control by intimidation the goal, to scare everyone that ‘all collected MAY/MIGHT be read’.

Interesting! You’ll have to explain the connection. My screen name is for a first kitty - a blue cream female who loved little kids. She was first my oldest sister’s. When she got too old, she moved on to second oldest, skipped #3 & stayed with me. Sisters 3 & 5 were to rambunctious for her.
