As of today Connecticut will have nearly the highest gasoline taxes in the country.
A new 3.6 cent wholesale gasoline tax increase, which retailers pass directly on to consumers at the pump, will bring the state's combined retail and wholesale gasoline taxes up 49.6 cents per gallon.
At more than 50 cents a gallon, only California and New York have a higher gas tax in the continental U.S., according to a report on the Connecticut Mirror website.
The hike comes just as Connecticut enters one of its busiest travel season the July 4 holiday weekend when vacationing Nutmeggers will take to both the highways and waterways in cars and boats.
While Connecticut puts a premium on taxing gasoline, the revenue raised from those taxes is largely bypassing state road improvements, the Mirror reports.
With the new gas taxes this week Connecticut will raise an extra $60 million at the pumps this year. But little of that money will go toward improving the state's highway infrastructure, the website reports. Instead, the state will continue to siphon the revenues for other spending.
Connecticut has been systematically underinvesting in its transportation infrastructure, and this has been going on for years and years and years, University of Connecticut economist Fred V. Carstensen told the
Mirror.
Gee, THERE'S a real shocker. This new tax doesn't include federal taxes, excise taxes etc etc.
CT had a champion against gas tax increases, Len Suzio. He lost his largely8 urban district narrowly in large part due to Romney atop the ticket, and in small due to lack of support from the atrophied state party.
Just another reason to never stop in CT other than to take a leak. At least they haven’t thought about pay toilets at the rest stops. Yet.
no one will care what the gas prices are in this state or any other as long as the media doesn’t care to remind us. The drones outnumber us, folks. I can’t believe what I am seeing. No one (not enough) gives a damn.
Who makes more from sales at the pump industry or government?
The gas stations in Massachusetts are ecstatic. Their business will really take off now. If you have a big tank, you can save almost $20 by crossing the border.
If they don’t take their cars, they take the bus. Those who love their cars will pay an arm and leg for gas.
Exactly. You wonder if you did a modeled analysis of the number of people who live near the MA border and who realistically will fill up in MA every time whether this tax increase is a net neutral or negative revenue stream.
Taxation with misrepresentation.
It just means that they have emptied the States coffers and without new taxes there is nothing left to steal.
The majority of drivers in CT. must be o.k. with the pump prices since they support the politicians who pass these taxes.
No only that, but liquor is much cheaper there as well. Make that a double fill-up.
Gee, two thousand thousand Million dollar stimulus packages, and massive increased gas taxes to improve “infrastructure” and still the roads are crap.
Where is all this money going? Could our political “leaders” be so kind as to actually spend a penny out of every dollar they pocket on what they took the money for? Is that too much to ask.
That would be brand new freeways and bridges nation wide!
I guess a few thousand men’s lifetime earnings each is just not enough to live comfortably as a retired Politician.
“Where is all this money going?”
To pay for illegal alien EBT cards and unfunded government employee pensions.
Not to mention union benefits for General Motors and teachers union health benefits (from the TARP/Stimulus) in rich Massachusetts towns like Sudbury, MA.
I live in MA, but the CT border is about 100 yards from my house. It is a pain in the ass to have all of these CT folks backed up at our gas stations every weekend.
But, I have to laugh at people coming INTO MA to get something with lower taxes on it. It is a wonder to be sure.
I read sometime back that there was a Federal law saying the oil companies had to sell to the New England states cheaper than the states who produce the oil...
