(Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday he had decided to offer asylum to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who has petitioned several countries to avoid capture by Washington.

"In the name of America's dignity ... I have decided to offer humanitarian asylum to Edward Snowden," Maduro told a televised military parade marking Venezuela's independence day.

The 30-year-old former National Security Agency contractor is believed to be holed up in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport.

WikiLeaks said on Friday that Snowden had applied to six more nations for asylum, bringing to about 20 the number of countries he has asked for protection from U.S. espionage charges.

He sold America's military secrets to Red China.

He is a traitor on an Aldrich Ames/Robert Hanssen level.

I can't believe this many FReepers are this gullible.

Snowden’s father expressed the essence of the matter when he said that Snowden he did not betray the people of the United States but only the government.

said, "Passing secrets to Red China is the real event."

What information could he have pass?

He claims he didn't and if he did he would still be in China.

Is he a Maoist? .. maybe. frankly I don't care what he believes he is outing wrongs the left doesn't have a clue about and waking up the left a little

“Communists protect their own.”

What do you think is sitting in the Oval Office? A muzzie loving Commie.

They need to give Snowden a medal. I for one am glad to know the extent of the police state. Maybe there is still time to do something about it.

Its time for everyone to wake up and get a clue. The United States is now the tyrant. We live in a frightening and horrific situation where all 3 branches of govt are conspiring together to erect a totalitarian dictatorship. So far its coming along nicely.

Quit wasting your ire on Snowden and aim it at the real criminals. The govt of the USA.

“All of the other nations laugh at us for requesting his extradition.”

All those other countries would shot this traitor had he been one of their own on sight...

The laughter you hear is from those nations celebrating the triumph of the fellow travelers claiming this traitor is a hero..

Do you have evidence Snowden sold military secrets to China or is that your opinion?

Btw, Snowden is the “shiny object”. The real traitors are those in this Regime who approved the unConstitutional re-direct of the Patriot Act and spied on Americans not engaging terrorists overseas.

Its truly sad that neither major political party is upset with all the data collection-spying on every American.

More reason for me to not be tied to the GOP.

When will some elected official stand up and say that the spying must stop????????

The silence ...............................

Well Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner a Republican & author of the Patriot act opposes what the Regime has done with it. Too bad he isn’t getting the media time Mccain & co are getting.

He isn’t in office anymore and doesn’t have to toe the line of the leadership-media etc. No elected official should but most do.

Its unfortunate then that Sessenbrenner(sp) is being ignored by Republican politicians. It makes them untrustworthy to agree with the unConstitutional expansion of the Patriot act.
