To cover his political flank, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has forged an alliance with tea party darling Rand Paul, picked up support from other national tea party leaders and brought in a campaign manager from the upper echelons of the tea party movement.
The GOP's fiscally conservative wing has proven particularly powerful in Kentucky, and elsewhere it has felled incumbents including McConnell's longtime Republican colleague U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana. But McConnell's efforts to make inroads with the tea party movement have clearly paid off, virtually ensuring that no would-be challenger can get the kind of infusion of cash from tea party channels that allowed Paul to win here in 2010.
Paul, who has presidential aspirations and is looking to run in 2016, needs McConnell's connections to the wealthy donor base of the Republican establishment. Meanwhile, McConnell needs Paul's tea party influence to keep potential primary challengers at bay and to energize his general election campaign against the likely Democratic nominee, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Well, it’s a sure bet tea party conservatives won’t gain anything with this unholy alliance. RINO McConnell should retire before he goes totally senile in office.

You would think that Paul would have a good talk with Jim DeMint about Mitch McConnell’s deep-seeded duplicity before selling out to Mitch.
Seems pretty straight forward. Mitch is buying off Rand with Wall Street and K Street money. Main Street is SOL.
McConnell should go, not stay.
“Tea Party” was a label applied to Rubio and if McConnell gets “Tea Party” support then we see the deceit again.
McConnell is likely to turn on the Tea Party like a rabid dog.

I think Mitch Lets-make-a-deal, really needed a strong primary challenger to explain to the voters the "lets make a deal with the liberals" culture in the senate, that helps the liberals get through a lot of their agenda.
Unfortunately, even if the republicans get a majority in the senate, the liberals will get a lot of what they want, because Mitch and his RINO friends will team up with the democrats. Rand Paul may then make a show of standing up for conservatism, because he knows that the RINOs will get what they want. We are seeing this in the Republican majority House and Boehner.
Not surprising McConnell would do this. Very disappointing that Rand Paul would do something like this. Rand Paul risks doing to himself what Rubio did to himself.
Also , I am waiting anxiously to see the position Ted Cruz takes on fellow Texas Senator RINO John Cornyn, especially if Cornyn gets a primary challenge for 2014. Cornyn cowardly hid behind a No vote on the immigration bill, but behind the scenes was a major supporter in getting it passed. I am hoping Ted Cruz helps us get rid of Cornyn, or that he at least won’t get in the way of kicking Cornyn’s butt out. In other words I hope Ted Cruz does not do for Cornyn what Rand Paul just did for McConnell. That is no way to add to our conservative base in the Senate.

The election primaries are the only truly effective opportunity for conservatives to get the RINOs to explain themselves and face the music. Once we forfeit this opportunity and give them a free pass, we don’t have a strong position anymore.
Yeah, like Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum. Once the moderate is safely reelected with the help of the conservative, he will work to undermine and remove the conservative.
Yep. Sounds like Ron Paul gave Mitch McConnell his free pass, and pulled the rug out from under those of us who wanted to primary McConnell. Thanks Ron Paul.
It is pretty clear that the Repub party is completely controlled by liberals and left of center pols, and those benefiting from crony capitalism.
A primary candidate should attack Rand Paul on hispandering as well and not representing Kentucky.
