remember how puzzled and angry my mother would get when I got home, still dripping wet. I was a complete mystery to her in some ways.

Ah ha..LOL ....just had to read farther to get the answer to that. :-) I had my experiences at Huntington Beach ....I look back and am amazed I survived. Recently got pounded into the sand by a sneak wave on Maui - tore my earrings off - it wasn't even a big wave.

The power of the ocean is not to be messed with. I can (and does) crush us like bugs.

I have to admit, before the age of 35, I could not visualize myself living past 35. For some reason, when I was a kid (and into adulthood) I could easily visualize myself being 20 years old, 25 years old, 30 years old, etc. I could imagine what I was going to look like, what I was going to be doing, the whole 9 yards.

But for some really weird reason, I could not visualize myself at any age past 35. It was a little unsettling, it was like a giant black wall.

Once I got past it, then I was able to visualize myself as a decrepit 90-year-old guy. But before that, I couldn’t do it.

When I was a kid, I was one of those accident prone kids. I was always cutting myself, having strange things happen. I’m sure today, my parents would’ve definitely got a visit from the Department of youth services.

"Yokosuka... your dad must’ve been a career navy man."

Yep. That's the bay between the heliport and Berkey Field. When typhoons come through, they often leave behind large piles of detritus along the footpath and even the road paralleling that seawall.

Thank you, and your late father, for your service.

The same to you for YOUR service, FRiend. We were lucky, people like you and I. We had the opportunity to do what we could in the service of our country, and in return we saw things and experienced things that few people who didn’t have that opportunity will never have.

I didn’t make a career out of the military (as my father did) but I learned more about myself and the world in those four years that I served, and I did in all those years since then.

I’m grateful for the imprint that it had on me, because I feel that it has helped me in my personal life and professional life in more ways than I can count.
