Hollywood Part 4

ArmyPatch small   Marine small   Air Force Seal   Air Force   Coast Guard Seal small (better)

Another story from the Hollywood legends of old.  Their stories may surprise you!  I wish today's "Hollywood Elite" would take some direction from these guys!

(Thanks for the heads-up on this guy, SandRat!)

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him a special envoy to South America.

Although celebrated as an actor, Fairbanks was commissioned a reserve officer in the United States Navy at the onset of World War II and assigned to Lord Louis Mountbatten's Commando staff in the United Kingdom.

Having witnessed (and participated in) British training and cross-channel harassment operations emphasizing the military art of deception, Fairbanks attained a depth of understanding and appreciation of military deception then unheard of in the United States Navy. Lieutenant Fairbanks was subsequently transferred to Virginia Beach where he came under the command of Admiral H. Kent Hewitt, who was preparing U.S. Naval forces for the invasion of North Africa.

Fairbanks convinced Hewitt of the advantages of such a unit[clarification needed], then repeated the proposal at Hewett's behest to Admiral Ernest King, Chief of Naval Operations. King thereupon issued a secret letter on March 5, 1943 charging the Vice Chief of Naval Operations with the recruitment of 180 officers and 300 enlisted men for the Beach Jumper program.

The Beach Jumpers' mission would simulate amphibious landings with a very limited force. Operating dozens of kilometers from the actual landing beaches and utilizing their deception equipment, the Beach Jumpers would lure the enemy into believing that theirs was the principal landing.

United States Navy Beach Jumpers saw their initial action in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. Throughout the remainder of the war, the Beach Jumpers conducted their hazardous, shallow-water operations throughout the Mediterranean.

For his planning the diversion-deception operations and his part in the amphibious assault on Southern France, Lieutenant Commander Fairbanks was awarded the United States Navy's Legion of Merit with bronze V (for valor), the Italian War Cross for Military Valor, the French Légion d'honneur and the Croix de guerre with Palm, and the British Distinguished Service Cross. Fairbanks was also awarded the Silver Star for valor displayed while serving on PT boats and the National Order of the Southern Cross, conferred by the Brazilian government. Among his other exploits was the sinking of the light cruiser Capriole while in command of a mixed division of American PT Boats and British MGBs.

He was made an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1949. Fairbanks stayed in the Naval Reserve after the war and ultimately retired a captain in 1954.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Take it really easy as you move around.

Are you able to park really close to the entrance?

Have a good commute going and coming.

Earlier this evening, I witnessed one of the most callous, depraved and thoroughly evil acts I have ever witnessed in my entire life. I received a call from Mrs. MacNessa while I was out on an errand saying that we might have to call the police. When I arrived home, I viewed a video that my son John-Man had been alerted to concerning two youths that my sons had at one time been associated with. One was holding the video cam, the other was doing the deed and both were laughing while they did and recorded it.

The youth in the video had a cat by the neck and was repeatedly slamming the cat into the wall. I'm not sure whether the cat expired during this exercise or not. Mrs. MacNessa was so overwrought she couldn't view it.

I immediately called the police and clued them in on what I had seen. They sent officers by who looked at the video with us. The officers were equally repulsed by what they saw, took down all the information we were able to provide and stated that they would do whatever they could under the law.

I looked up the cruelty to animals statute in Maryland - max 3 years - $5,000.00 fine. John-Man emailed the video to the Officers - I expect a warrant will issue before the end of the night.

It is most distressing to see this kind of gratuitous violence and cruelty practiced by the youths of our Nation. It augers ill for our future. May our Dear Lord preserve and protect us from this horrid Evil!

Thanks very much, Kathy - commute should be okay tomorrow. I have a handicapped sticker - I'm able to park right next to the elevator.

Not really. It was 8 miles away yesterday and 7 miles today. However, the winds are blowing northwest today and our ski lodge, arctic survival school, trap and skeet range, and military firing range look to be out of danger as the fire is moving back on areas already burned.

Good news for Salcha residents to the east of us.

Bad news for the folks living north of the the Chena river.

We had some very scary looking smoke/clouds today. Atomic bomb like.

A small aircraft has crashed and burst into flames at an airport in Alaska, killing all 10 people on board.

The accident is believed to have happened as the plane took off from Soldotna airport, around 60 miles from Anchorage.

An Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman said the aircraft was engulfed in flames before firefighters were able to get to the crash site.

Clint Johnson, an investigator with the US National Transportation Safety Board, said nine passengers and the pilot were killed.

The victims have not yet been identified.

Flying across the vast northern state is common for Alaska residents, despite hazards including treacherous mountain passes and volatile weather.

OMG!!! Despicable actions, and the depravity and evilness is so much worse as they thought to video their cruelness.

I hope the video leads to the whole 3 years in jail and the $5000 fine!!

Ladies, I was reluctant to post that because of the dastardly behavior involved, but I just couldn't let it go by without posting it on this forum, which to me is the only place I know on the net that preserves the notions and values that were passed on to us by our parents.

I hope I didn't offend anyone. As Mrs. MacNessa pointed out to me, we took in a kitten from the maggot who was slamming the cat into the wall - it's Clementine, and God only knows what happened to her before we got her. We have taken in rescue dogs and cats before and we know what the indicia of abuse are. Clementine was abused and thank God she came to us!

Being forced by wind back on to the burn is really good news for some.

Hope the water drops can keep the Chena River Road folks out of trouble.

I’m glad you shared.....others will see.

All should be affected and vow to follow up as you and your family have done when confronted by evil.

I could no less. I couldn't possibly sleep well had I let that go by. Must retire now - back to the salt mines in the morning.

Good Night, Kathy! Good night all!

God Bless America!
