Rand Paul mocks Rick Perry over debate flub
The Hill ^ | July 9, 2013 | Justin Sink

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has hinted he could mount a 2016 presidential bid, is already taking shots at his potential competition in the Republican primary.

The freshman senator was asked Monday night during an appearance on Fox News about Texas Gov. Rick Perry's (R) announcement he would not seek reelection — a move that has prompted speculation that Perry could again run for the White House.

“If Gov. Perry decides to run for president, I think there would be three good reasons why he could be president: Texas is a big successful state, he’s a long term governor and … I can’t remember the other one,” Paul quipped.

The joke was a reference to Perry's disastrous performance in a November 2011 GOP presidential debate, in which he was unable to remember the third federal agency he wanted to eliminate.

"Commerce, Education and the — what's the third one there? Let's see," Perry said at the time.

Perry later acknowledged the gaffe — telling CBS News that he "stepped in it" — but his campaign was never able to recover. He later endorsed Newt Gingrich for the Republican nomination ahead of the South Carolina primary.

Nobody’s going to fund Perry after the disaster that was his 2012 run. People like to have return on their investment.

LOL! I'm not a big fan of Perry, but I recognize that he's an able politician, and he can deliver hay makers with the best of them.

A couple of decent debate performances, and Perry will bury the demons from 2012.

I’ll never understand the fascination with those amoral libertarian twits.

It was just a joke.

At someone else's expense. That's not a joke, it shows Rand is low level and following in Maher's footsteps.

" that would include a multi-year process of granting visas to undocumented workers that would hinge on the annual verification of the security of the U.S.-Mexico border."

No citizenship, no amnesty, dependent upon border security. That sounds like a conservative solution to me.

they remind me of people who want to do anything but nevrr pay taxes and certainly the ones I have talked to on the internet or in person have been more liberal than most liberals or even socialists minus them paying taxes

Welcome to FR. You must not live in Texas. Perry knows how to correct his mistakes, and he knows he "stepped in it" last year.

If he decides to go for it, he'll be prepared mentally, physically, and financially.

I believe so. The reason for the bad performances was Perry’s post-back surgery drugs. As he came off them, his performance improved greatly, but it was too late by then.

I doubt either one would get my vote.
Both are free traders so neither one would help the American jobs situation.

Rick Perry has benefited from the oil boom. His policies in Texas hasn’t hurt businesses, but the job growth is mostly oil driven there.

Rand Paul doesn’t have much of a record on trade but Ron Paul was another Free Trader.

Jokes are always at someone’s expense. Sometimes it’s yourself. Most of the time it’s not.

I’m giving Rand Paul a pass here. But I expect a comeback from Perry. And note that all of his has drawn attention to a possible 2016 run by Perry. He is back in the news again.

Right. /s

That's the promise we got twice before. Did it ever happen? Republicans like Paul are like Charlie Brown----always running to kick that football. Securing the border is a Constitutional requirement that carries no conditions, including amnesty for illegal aliens. Just enforce the law.

And he’s too much of a gentleman to *itch slap Rand. He probably just considers the source - the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. ‘Supposed’ conservatives going against conservatives is a RINO/liberal thing. We already had it in the last debates - where it was exposed. And the RINO’S never went after the other RINO’S but after the conservatives, Newt and Perry.
