Thousands took to streets across the US on Sunday, as protests against the acquittal of George Zimmerman entered their second day. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Follow RT's LIVE UPDATES on Zimmerman verdict fallout.

The Justice Department said Sunday that it will restart its investigation into last year’s killing to consider possible separate hate crime charges against George Zimmerman. The news follows huge public outcry and calls from civil rights leaders to reopen the inquiry.

"Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction...and whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the department's policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial,” a Justice Department spokesman said in a Sunday statement.

So, no legal result is valid as long as "protected individuals" are willing to riot.....

I thought we were a nation of laws.

The DOJ will persecute Zimmerman regardless, like the DA facts will not matter.

After an exhaustive investigation the FBI concluded that “race played no part” in this incident. There nothing more to investigate and there is no basis for hate crime charges. I think Obama is just announcing that the Justice Department is “investigating” the filing of federal charges to buy time and let things settle down. I don’t think anything will come of it.

“Thousands took to the streets across the U.S.”

BFD. Notice the ferals are only rioting in big, liberal cities where guns are essentially banned. Try that in the more conservative climes of southern states and they’ll get a strong dose of justice, all right.

Dear God, going after a private citizen is despicable. I guess the DOJ just doesn’t have anything else to do - no guns to run south of the border or anything like that?

Obvious that the administration wanted the acquittal so as to spur this hatred even harder. They will “organize the Chaos” with protests that “pop” up. They will continue to make statements that fuel the anger...this is just starting in my opinion.

The FBI already cleared Zimmerman of any racial motive in the incident. The DoJ has no case.

How'd that work out for the DA?

The DOJ has even less evidence than the DA.

That's what I've been thinking. Law by mob does not end well. Why do they think mob law can work? ...because the criminals in this administration allow them to believe so, nay, encourage them to believe such.

I’ll bet the Obama administration is investigating Zimmerman’s background with as much scrutiny as any opposition candidate in an election. If Zimmerman has any “Paula Dean” moments in his past, or really, any dirt whatsoever, they’ll find it and use it to obtain a successful prosecution.
