Houses of worship dont just accommodate religious gatherings. They also are places where deeply troubled people come to get help. If for no other reason than that, they should be off limits to guns.
Unfortunately, a state law rushed through in the closing days of the spring legislative session that allows the concealed carrying of guns also makes it legal to bring those firearms into places of worship. Thats an alarming prospect that needs to be rectified as quickly as possible.

Guns belong there far more than “Gad Damn America!” as Obama’s pastor said repeatedly.
Guns belong there far more than the racism that is seen in Chicago churches.
Guns belong in there far more than the support for abortion that has been in there.
Guns belong in there far more than the support for homosexuality, a sexual deviancy, that has been in there.
Two words.
“Jeanne Assam”.
Ah... does anyone else catch the inherent assumption here?
If there's a law, a rule or a sign, a "deeply troubled person" would not bring a gun in to a church for nefarious reasons.
My church has armed security but does not allow firearms by members or visitors. I am okay with that. All it takes is one nutbag to open fire and you have a major tragedy in a place where people come for quiet reflection.
I am not so much worried about Christians with guns as much as I am worried about Christian-haters who may try to commit mayhem and evil against members of the church.
As an usher, we are trained to keep our eyes open to suspicious behavior and we are instructed to find a security guard if there appears to be a threatening situation.
Outside the church, I’m all for concealed carry but there are some places I’m okay with leaving the guns in the cars and relying on professional security for that two hours. In an auditorium-type situation I think an amateur with a gun is just as likely to hit the wrong person as they are to hit the perp.
ah... I guess most of you DID catch that.
Our policy is no open carry, but we do have people (especially ushers) that DO closed carry, with the approval of the church. Recall the incident at New Life Church in Colorado in which a female parishioner DID stop a guy who had already killed some people in the parking lot and then entered the church to make a “bigger statement.”
ditto, there are several places you are a sitting duck if some one opens fire, schools and churches being among them.
There are places in Memphis I would not go unarmed. Went to pick blackberries from the house we are selling there, and I felt darn uncomfortable not having my gun, but as I was going to the Military base after, I could not carry it.
Guns belong everywhere there is a possibility that ferals, whack-o’s or degenerates might accost you and your family. Everywhere! The 2nd Amendment didn’t limit “where”. What’s wrong with these anti-2nd-Amendment pinhead morons? Are they asshat moonbats...or what?
Sometimes I read the article, want to comment and see all of the other FReeper comments and think to myself “couldn’t have said it better myself”. God bless all of you. Onward Christian soldiers!
“Guns dont belong in places of worship “
And neither do people who are hell-bent on robbing, assaulting or murdering anyone. But people of such a mindset are not restrained by the laws we have to forbid such things let alone the place they choose to commit their crimes. That is why people have a need of self-defense no matter where they are.
This A$$ Wagon has never been in a church. He is more worried about all the emotionally unstable people that go to church (in his opinion) than he is of the all the evil people outside the church that hate religious people.
That's my kind of humor. lol
They need to pass laws to keep this Brain Fart out of churches.
You must go to church in either Chicago or Faluja.
... And government buildings where deeply troubled people are elected and empowered.
A small town Baptist Church in Daingerfield, Texas a few years back had a person walk in the back door and shot several people. There were no carriers in the congregation and he had easy pickings.
It should be up to the Church as to whether firearms are allowed on the premesis and who is allowed to carry them.
We, the people, do NOT need spooge from GuvCo telling US what's best.
"He can't even run his own life. I'll be damned if he'll run mine!"
Weird how those who used to sing the protest songs of the 60s and early 70s are now the ones in control telling everybody else what to do (while they themselves do something else).
Wait until they find out there are whips, flails, and clubs in some of the Stations of the Cross depictions.
