TRENTON — An investigation into New Jersey’s school lunch program by the Office of the State Comptroller found “widespread fraud” among district employees and their families, who allegedly lied about their income so their kids could eat for free. The investigation, which officials said was sparked by a series of reports by The Star-Ledger into similar lunch program abuses in the Elizabeth Board of Education, found false information on lunch program applications submitted from the households of 40 school district employees — as well as six elected school board members in Pleasantville, Newark and Paterson.

All they have to do is under report their income and then slip the person verifying them a doughnut. Why is anyone surprised that Rat union members are all crooks?

I cannot say as I blame them.

They pay taxes to feed all of those in the program, why shouldn’t their kids get the benefit.

If we are going to feed one kid for free they should all be fed for free. Why should those who pay no taxes get free food while those who do pay taxes get none.

While not conceding that the program should exist to begin with, when the program does exist it must be administered sparingly, or it will go bankrupt just like every other program that's been sucked dry.

A dirty little not-so-secret in almost all welfare programs is that they want you to lie. The more people who hop on a program, the more money and power a bereaucrat can obtain for himself. No one in government cares about the waste because it is taxpayer money. As an added bonus to the government overseers, if you do act upon the ludicrous ease with which anyone can defraud a welfare program the state now has something on you to use if you ever step out of the state approved line.

Things have changed a lot since I went to school in the 50’s.

Back then we all carried our lunch in a paper sack or a lunch bag. No one got a free meal.

My post is a bit facetious and I do not have anything against feeding a poor child who is hungry.

These officials are obviously taking advantage, but how many others are doing the same thing? How many of those kids actually need to be fed at school instead of at home?

It’s damned nice of a school system to take the burden of feeding a child off the mother, but why shouldn’t a taxpayer get the same benefit?

I know it’s been a while but I seem to recall the school lunch being the most gawd awful thing that people went out of their way to avoid. And now you have very well paid employees scamming to get a tray of that slop every day? Maybe they just grounded their kids and having to eat the school lunch was part of the punishment.

Free breakfast and lunch make no sense. Families that can't afford food get food stamps. Let them use those for school lunch.

A real lot of students (numbers vary by schools) get their free meals, throw most of them away, and bring their own food....usually junk food, but for some healthy stuff.

Here in the People’s Republic of New Jersey, public schools are supported by property taxes paid by property owners.

We also have “Abott School Districts” such as Elizabeth and Newark. The “Abbott School Districts” receive all their funding from the productive taxpying landowners in other parts of the state. Peopl who live in the Abbott School Distrcits pay no school taxes - they are underpriviledged you see. But they get to elect the politicians and Board Members who spend the Abbott School money. One of the many reasons property taxes in New Jersey are out of sight.

The leftist activist courts in New Jersey, particularly the New Jersey State Supreme Court - and a worse collection of buffoons and political hacks exist nowhere else - are largely to blame for the Abbott School Mess.

My guess is a lot of my property taxes went into paying these pigs for their meals.

Don’t the schools get a federal subsidy for every person that signs up for free lunches? If they’re getting the money for meals that they aren’t actually serving, that sounds like a slush fund.

There is something to your argument, but taking that further turns into fradulent welfare benefits, medicare/medicaid fraud, and so on. Which we all pay for. If those who are ineligible for the benefits fraudulently take the benefits, then that really impacts those of us who pay taxes, and not in a good way.

we bagged it when I was young (60’s). mom gave us a nickle for milk.

We would have been embarrassed to get a “free lunch”. My children were the same way. They would rather take a bag lunch then be on welfare.

Why should those who pay no taxes get free food while those who do pay taxes get none.

Because those who pay taxes will then have to pay even more taxes. Just sayin'.

“Those inside know how the system works.”

They’re running out of taxpayers to suck dry; they (and the companies that employ them) are fleeing in droves. Can’t squeeze blood from a stone (or an off-the-books illegal).
