Dick Cheney: Rand Paul is wrong on government surveillance
Washington Post ^ | June 16 2013 | Sean Sullivan

Posted on 07/19/2013 11:10:19 PM PDT by WilliamIII

Former vice president Dick Cheney said Sunday that Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was wrong to suggest that the government’s recently revealed sweeping surveillance techniques are an invasion of Americans’ privacy. “Two-thirds of the Congress wasn’t here on 9/11, or for that period immediately after when we got into this program,” Cheney said on “Fox News Sunday.” He later added: “When you consider the possibility of somebody smuggling something like a nuclear device into the United States, it becomes very, very important to gather intelligence on your enemies and stop that attack before it ever gets launched.”

Cheney defended a National Security Agency program to collect phone records from millions of Americans, about which Paul has expressed deep concerns. The Kentucky senator announced last week that he has taken steps toward bringing legal action against the government over its surveillance efforts.

You would rather have a nuke go off here than have the patriot act? Really?

Don’t you know the nuke would likely lead to much worse surveillance programs and likely martial law?

Exactly. Don’t tell me we need all this surveillance when we have non-existent/lax immigration enforcement.

Great post! Also, Bush / Cheney did nothing to seal the border with Mexico. It’s not only Mexicans sneaking across.

That “Islam is a religion of peace” BS pi$$es me off, too.

Everything you said is spot on. Right after 9/11 we needed a Reagan and a Patton

and patton was assassinated, that should tell you all you need to know about the elites who run this world.

Weasel answer. I did not ask you to choose between Paul or Cheney. I asked whose position most closely matches your own.

What say you?

Not even close. I will go with Rand Paul over Cheney.

The NSA spying is a criminal act and Cheney approves of it. POS IMO.

Dick defending the indefensible. Are Dick and George on some kind of tag-team to legitimize obama’s unconstitutional ways or something?

Recently Jorge attempts to give obama cover by endorsing cultural and economic suicide via amnesty, and now Richie gives his blessing to ignore the 4A and poo-poos blatant government overreach in general. Not only do these two fail to solve problems, they create new ones

Meanwhile both of them are immune to the fallout of what's to come. Thanks a lot for your 'service' boys.

"The NSA lied to congress. and the datacenter in Utah they are building is designed to store everything. And I mean everything. I ran into an IBM guy in Texas who is saying the NSA is buying tons of storage for that site. In the multiple yottabyte range."

I come from a long line of data analytic innovations, including being an executive at 2 of the largest global big-data companies. I've been watching the hearings on CSPAN and the gov minions are still lying about their data capture scope and data access processes.

Several of the Rats were actually asking more revelatory and technical questions than the GOP members. What came out is that 22 managers in the NSA can approve queries on the full dataset of national / international communications without making a specific request to FISA. Periodically, there are internal NSA spot reviews of queries and summary annual reports are provided to FISA on issues identified from spot reviews. Congress gets a 1/2 page report annually. Wow! The transparency!

This means that all first-order queries are at the discretion of NSA internal approvals. Then, there are 2nd and 3rd order queries based on the output of the initial 1st order query that don't go through FISA. There is literally an exponential growth of identities at the 2nd and 3rd order queries.

This whole data capture and mashup of every source of information on individuals and groups / companies will be made significantly more potent once Obamacare comes on line in full. The first $800 billion "stimulus", before Obamacare, contained $40 billion to implement a national database of electronic medical records. What! Why was that put into a stimulus bill before any legal structure was in place to support such a massive program to capture detailed, very personal information on the entire population of the USA? Viola - along comes Obamacare!

So, FU Cheney, Mr. Globalist New World Order (Bush Sr's words, not mine) useful idiot!

I think Dick Cheney might be attacking a straw man here.

Rand, AFAIK, isn’t against gathering of intelligence on terrorist suspects.

I am not against that, either.

What I *do* oppose is the systemic and systematic gathering of data on every American person and their behaviors...which is what Ed Snowden appears to have revealed.

I also believe men of ill repute and bad character ought not be in charge of such information. I believe Dick Cheney is well aware of the current regime’s lack of good character—and in fact Dick Cheney, I am certain, did not support the current regime....

So Rand Paul is right, and so is Dick Cheney—they just appear to be talking about different things. That is how I see this debate.

Government is by its very nature political. Placing this much power and authority in any human’s hands is an abuse.

I have a right to be secure in my person and papers. This extends to electronic communications and information in electronic form. Profile, target the real threats or let’s stand down and take our chances.

I don’t feel the least bit safer with morons from the TSA searching busty women, teen girls, toddlers, the handicapped or the elderly. It’s all theater. It’s all abuse.

It’s time to stop and return the country to pre-9/11 America. We’re done.

What has a single overseas adventure gained us? Name the country we’ve shed blood in that is a valid ally or that hasn’t retrograded?

The 3rd world is the 3rd world because of a culture of mistrust, tribalism and religious retardation. Why ruin America to protect that?

The elites are so mentally and financially out of touch with the rest of the country how can you take anything they say seriously?

Liz Cheney is running in WY not because she loves that state and has strong ties to it, but because it’s an easy GOP win and she’ll be a Senator for life. It’s a game to these people.

Stop play and elect the TEA Party candidates to the GOP. Let’s win.

Here’s an idea, Dick. How ‘bout stopping people from coming into our country we think might cause us harm. Let’s do a little profiling. Will we not survive if we stop allowing muslims in? Are we that afraid that we cannot survive unless muslims own all the convenience stores and fast food joint? Do we hate Christians so much that we want a muslim to buy Chic fil A?

G.H.W. Bush’s neighbors held a huge fundraiser for Obama. You can’t tell me Bush didn’t know them.

Between smaller more Constitutional government, and the Federal leviathan we have today thanks in part to neo-cons like Cheney...

You choose bigger government.

Got it...
