On Friday, MSNBCs Melissa Harris-Perry put forth a theory as to why Detroit inevitably went bankrupt terminal lack of government.
Well do our best to explain.
While discussing Detroits downfall, Harris-Perry and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean agreed that youve got to have a government to run the place.
Harris-Perry noted Detroits declining population, and in turn its tax base. The population of the city has declined dramatically over the last 10 years.
Mediaites Noah Rothman, who calls the MSNBC hosts assessment delusional, provides some analysis and facts:
Harris-Perry presents this fact as though former Detroit residents left estimated in 2011 at one resident every 22 minutes on a whim without making a cost/benefit calculation as to whether to continue to reside in a city with one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation with a poverty rate of a staggering 40 percent.
Furthermore, since Detroits population has fallen below 750,000, it was not legally allowed to collect income taxes from its residents until Gov. Rick Snyder and the state legislature reduced that threshold to 600,000 two years ago. The citys population hovers today around 700,000 residents.

Nonetheless, Harris-Perry went on to claim that this lack of tax base is also exactly the thing that many Republicans would impose on us even when our cities have sufficient populations.
This is what it looks like when government is small enough to drown in your bathtub and it is not a pretty picture, she added.
They’re just really pi$$ed they can’t find any white people to tax to death.
Detroit has too many people on welfare (and other government benefits) and not enough taxpayers to pay for it all. This is what happens when Dems are put in charge.
I’m waiting for them to use some trick to collect taxes from suburbs and nearby communities....you know, the place where people escaped to get away from Detroit.
“Theyre just really pi$$ed they cant find any white people to tax to death.”
This very scenario coming real soon to third world sh%& holes all across America.
What happened to Detroit is a picture of what is happening to the United States.
Too many Freebies foisted on those who work. Not enough workers to support the non-workers.
As we go along in this country handing pout food stamps wholesale, Obamacare for those who don’t pay for it supported by the few who do, supporting thousands in prison who have to be fed and watered.
Our nations is dying of the same disease Detroit is dying from, and the plague is spreading while we invite people from other countries to come and enjoy the fruit of the labor the few of us are still doing.
They’d have to expand their city limits and that would require votes of the people involved. I’d think not likely. And since the governor/legislature fixed it so they can’t collect taxes any more because of its size, I’d say they’re pretty well screwed. UNLESS Obama bails them out.
Yet corruption is always the inevitable consequence of a too big government and bloated bureaucracy.
It’s the PENSIONS, STUPID!!!
This is exactly what the LEFT thinks. Harris-Perry is too stupid to think for herself. This is what’s been poured into her empty head since she was a child.
Didnt even have to guess it was a “sista” making this analysis.
“Im waiting for them to use some trick to collect taxes from suburbs and nearby communities....you know, the place where people escaped to get away from Detroit.”
The city council, the unions, and their members, are running a bluff, holding out in the hope (belief) that Obama and the Dem’s will bail them out. And, if Obama can find an opening to do this he will indeed do it. The senate is a lost cause, at least until prayerfully the next election. But, the GOP has instinctive primordial knack for screwing up their chances, time after time. And, I have no hope that tet won’t do it again. So, our hope of last recourse is the House. “Maybe”, it will hang tough - if House conservatives can prop up Boehner so that he won’t go wobbly and start crying. When, oh when, do we get rid of Boehner?????
Not exactly. It’s the UNFUNDED pensions. Politicians agree to contracts they can’t afford, then they underfund the pensions over many years, so they can buy votes. The core of the problem is incumbency: politicians want to get re-elected. They want to be treated like a god ad go first class. Unfortunately, that includes almost all human beings faced with the temptations of wealth and power that a professional political career can provide.
Don’t blame the janitor for the bankruptcy of Trump Tower.
The working class left Detroit because the city was systematically destroyed by ghettofiers who didnt take care of their property and let it fall into ruin in adition to creating a hostile environment whiteys just didn’t want to live in...
And she is among the “best and brightest” of the Negro race?
The two go hand-in-hand. The bigger the government, the more corruption.
Anyone with a hyphenated last name is suspect.
