A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck off New Zealand, jolting the national capital, but no tsunami alert was issued and there were no immediate reports of major damage.
The quake hit at 5:09pm (local time) on Sunday, 57 kilometres south-south-west of Wellington, at a depth of 14 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
USGS initially reported the magnitude at 6.9.
It was followed minutes later by another quake of 5.5 magnitude and came about 10 hours after a 5.8 tremor in the same region.

Earthquakes are the pits. Worst thing is that there is no warning.
(Blizzards an hurricanes can be seen coming and during tornado season people at least know to keep a weather eye out.)
And SoCal is overdue for a big one.......... 8^!
