Online advertising giant Google's new wearable accessories are merely a stepping stone to its ultimate ambition - a microchip which can be embedded in users' brains.
The company, which uses its search, email and other services to funnel personalised advertising to users, is currently trialling prototypes of its Glass device, which is worn like a pair of glasses.
But Google is staking its future on a new service which will use the information it holds on registered users to automatically predict their search needs and present them with the data they want.
The ultimate ambition is to literally get inside users' heads: using search queries to read their thoughts and then fulfilling their data needs by sending results directly to microchips implanted into people's brains.
Ben Gomes, Google's Vice-President of Search told The Independent that the sinister-sounding vision is far from a sci-fi fantasy and that research had already begun with such chips to help disabled people steer their wheelchairs.
'They are getting a few senses of direction with the wheelchair but getting from there to actual words is a long ways off,' he said.
'We have to do this in the brain a lot better to make that interaction possible. We have impatience for that to happen but the pieces of technology have to develop.'
But standing in the way of this ambition is a major civil liberties backlash over claims that Google has conspired with U.S. authorities to open a 'back door' to data it holds on its hundreds of millions of users, allowing spies to monitor their online activities.
The company, whose 'Don't be evil' motto has long attracted derision from privacy campaigners, is alleged to have allowed analysts from the National Security Agency to 'mine' the terabytes of personal information it holds.

Is Google planning a microchip for people's brains? Engineering boss at internet giant says sci-fi-style technology will begin by helping disabled people control wheelchairs *********************************************************
For liberals, it will be the only 'brain' they have........gonna need a lot of excelsior to keep it from rattling.......
Democrats have been putting microchips in peoples brains for many years now
47% of the population will be lining up for that...especially if the gubment says they’ll deposit their monthly check directly to the account associated with their chip.
Mark of the Beast?
Those surface currents are not thinking. They are caused by the brain functioning.
This is a dumb and dangerous idea. Obviously my words aren’t going to stop it, and it will happen regardless.
Mark of the Stupid.............
Pron beamed directly to your head.........
Google doesn’t build chips. However I heard that ARM is coming out with their 666 line of processors shortly.
At least it’ll be Google that captures us.
Just imagine if it were Microsoft...you might wake up one day and all you could see is the blue screen of death.
Imagine it. There will be an implant that's scanned for everything....financial transactions, medical history, profile of activities, security, ID, GPS monitoring, everything. It's just a matter of getting people to accept being chipped since all of this can already be done on a chip that isn't implanted.
I don't know if you've ever seen this in a casino...there's an observation room, where everyone walking around is a blip on the screen. It's incredible. People are like rats in a maze, creating patterns of behavior.
In the maze we'll live in, they'll be able to ID all of the rats. The Matrix and all of that.
I'm not approving. I'm totally convinced that technology is evolving so quickly that it'll do us in. No species can adapt this quickly. It's a math thing about rate of change.
What could possibly go wrong?

.
In honor of Prince Charles?
Maybe Apple needs to jump in to the fray...........an overpriced chip that you can’t get just anywhere and will work only with Apple approved sources..............
When you’ve got billions of dollars to waste, they can buy a chip maker.......
“What could possibly go wrong?”
Malware, for one thing. “The voices in my head told me to do it”.
The solution is willpower. “Must... resist... advertising...”
By the way, when I was a boy, I learned that Nazi Germany and the Communist bloc had propaganda. We were propaganda-free, but we did have advertising. Now I realize... same thing.
Only people without a brain would let google put anything in their brain.
google is evil.
It seems to me that this is an excellent opportunity to make fun of the idea of brain chip implants, with parody advertisements.
Start with a SWAT team breaking into someone’s house late at night, and holding them on the floor at gunpoint, while one of them injects the chip implant through their skulls.
Then show them the next day, sitting around the breakfast table in a zoned out daze, talking about how happy they are now and how their government is always working on their behalf, and how thinking is bad and obedience is good.
