MONTGOMERY, Alabama – A Jefferson County lawmaker wants to change Alabama’s Stand Your Ground law so the defense can not be invoked by someone who followed or pursued a person before a confrontation.

The legislation is directly inspired by the shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida.

“I’m calling this the Trayvon Martin amendment,” Rep. Merika Coleman-Evans, D-Pleasant Grove.

A lot of these SYG-type repeal and amendment BS legislation making the rounds this week.

Even if the "Trayvon Martin Amendment" or something like that had been in effect at the time in FL...Trayvon Marton would still be a dead thug, and George Zimmerman would still be a free (innocent) man.

George Zimmerman did NOT use ‘Stand Your Ground’ as a defense.
It was simply self defense from a thug that attacked.

Actually, do not many SYG laws make such a provision for the "first in" not being entitled to a SYG defense? In other words, you cannot provoke a confrontation, make your victim fight back, and then claim stand your ground as you shoot the victim.

NOTE WELL, the prosecution in the Zimmerman trial DID NOT raise this objection, possible under Florida law. I took that as implicit recognition of what the testimony and evidence proved: Zimmerman disengaged and it was St. Skittles that was the aggressor in a separate, but related incident, his subsequent ambush attack of Zimmerman.

I had made that point when the initial reporting of the Sanford shooting went down, that if it was continuous action as the early reports implied, Zimmerman was cooked as the aggressor. But he wasn't.

Call this what it is, a "Thug Protection" effort. The implication of repealing SYG is that if a thug threatens you, you have to run away. So a bully or group of them can go around menacing people with impunity. Turn the streets back to the criminals.

Considering that SYG laws have been shown to benefit blacks more than whites, I would say that it's more ideologically motivated than racial.

But then again, a majority of legal Hispanic immigrants support amnesty for illegals, when one would think that they would overwhelmingly oppose it because it drives down wages and employment opportunities for them.

I guess the real motivation is tribal above all else.
