House votes to continue NSA surveillance program (217-205)

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to continue the collection of hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records in the fight against terrorism.

The chamber rejected a measure to end the program's authority. The vote was 217-205 on Wednesday.

Republican Rep. Justin Amash had challenged the program as an indiscriminate collection of phone records. His measure, if approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the president, would have ended the program's statutory authority.

The White House, national security experts in Congress and the Republican establishment had lobbied hard against Amash's effort.

Libertarian-leaning conservatives and some liberal Democrats had supported Amash's effort.

The vote was unlikely to settle the debate over privacy rights and government efforts to thwart terrorism

Can’t walk away from that. They just said they don’t care about the 4th amendment.

It's just sooooo maddening.

Bachmann and Ryan voted against this. Which leads me to believe there is more to this.

And those that did vote, didn't record their vote!???

I hope the voters throw these bums out, all of them. We need accountable and attributable representatives in Congress. BTW, crybaby Boehner can go F himself.

Maybe it was presented in a confusing way, just like a few FReepers here have gotten it reversed.
(Including me, I had to read it twice.)

Any politician that voted for this is either a traitor, or a crook afraid of what the NSA knows. Every single one of them need to be thrown out of Office.

VERY IMPORTANT!

A vote FOR this measure would have cut off NSA funding for indiscriminant recording of all phone calls.

A vote AGAINST this measure was a vote to continue as is.

Like I’ve been saying, don’t point your fingers at the NSA, it’s Congress that’s in charge; our “representatives”.

Also, funded or not, that does not mean it will pass Constitutional muster.

You place your faith in a phantom.

Obamacare passed muster.

Shame on them.

I remember getting yelled at for not voting for Romney just because he had an “R” beside his name.

“At least he’s better than Obama!” They all screamed.

If Romney would of lost by a huge margin, instead of a sliver, that would’ve sent a message that conservatives have had enough.

But trust me, come 2016, people will be screaming “At least Lindsey Graham is better than Hillary!” and people will rush to vote for the guy with the “R” all over again.

I don't think we could ever blame Obama for this as it started way before him. Blame whomever the puppet masters are. They got to Bush as well.

Obama didn't trash the economy either. That started under Bush, but we rightfully slam him for not fixing it, even making it worse.

We could have hung this albatross around his neck. Maybe he inherited an unconstitutional program, but he kept it going.

Not any more. This belongs to Congress now - they could have shut it down but refused. They now own it, and we need to make them answer for it.

Continue what? This article is too vague. If it means they have access to database of all calls made and they search against it using a single target and they have a court +’ that one target then I have less concerns.

What they must stop is going to a judge for permission to tap everyone’s phone in say boston. This is what they did in VZ. These are separate things in the latter case they are getting audio and data records en masse and looking at all of them. In the former case the machine is only returning matches against a single target and not presenting my records to anyone.

They need to go back to old school wiretap 101 one target at a time. I dont know what they just passed but I suspect it means NSA can do whatever the hell they want.

KEVIN BRADY = RINO

Kevie baby, I hope your staff reads this. I will use time, talent and treasure to ensure you are defeated in the upcoming election.

All I come into contact with will know you voted for big government surveillance of innocent law abiding citizens.
