FULL TITLE: Lance Armstrong Says It's The Postal Service's Fault For Giving Him $41 Million When He Was On Drugs
Lance Armstrong' defense of the false claims lawsuit brought against him by former cycling teammate Floyd Landis is a breathtaking act of chutzpah: It is the government's fault that his sponsor, the U.S. Postal Service, did not know he was taking drugs when he won all those Tour de Frances, Armstrong argues.
In fact, the post office liked sponsoring Armstrong when he was doping, the cyclist argues, and "got exactly what it bargained for."
Armstrong made the argument in legal papers seeking to rebut Landis' allegations that Armstrong's doping, and his lying about taking those drugs, defrauded the USPS out of its sponsorship money. USPS paid Armstrong and his team more than $41 million in sponsorship in two contracts in 1996 and 2000, the lawsuit says.

The entire sport was corrupt at the time, and I'm not convinced it has cleaned itself up yet.
Lance is such a self centered person, he started here in Plano Texas and dumped the Richardson Bike Shop owner and others who helped him start his career the first chance he had.
Post office can’t possibly prove damages, so the case should be dismissed.

Were they always with us? Why are they only NOW oozing up from the putrid miasma of our sick society? What stinking sewer have they crawled out of?
I personally DO NOT know any people like this and I hope never to meet any.
He does NOT have a point. He’s a thief, a cheat, a liar, and the Grand Architect of Deception that cost honest people connected with the sport their reputations (calling his Irish masseuse a prostitute and a drunk, trying to wreck the business opportunities for the Andreus and Greg Lemond, who told the truth), a chance at the championship and sponsorships. He is a gold-plated thief of opportunities, a bully and a mountebank. Contrast to Chris Froome, Cadel Evans, Brad Wiggins and numerous others who did not use drugs to steal from others - I want our money back to the Postal Service from the gold-plated phony named Lance Armstrong.
Is there anybody out there that still thinks this guy was clean? Are they in the market for a bridge?
The P.O. got exactly what they paid for, publicity and exposure. They couldn’t have gotten more bang for the buck at any advertising agency in the world. Whether he was juicing or not is beside the point at this time.
Now, the biggest question is did the P.O. really need to spend the money for advertising? Taxpayers money???
Because somehow the Post Office has been tarnished by Lance’s use of performance enhancers?

The crooks in the post office just want the money back because the cheating bastards are broke. They’d like to pass around another quarter billion in bonuses they can’t really afford.

I have some sympathy for American cyclists. Back then (and maybe still), all the top Euro riders were doping, the governing body refused to do anything about it, so Americans started doping to have any chance of winning. Lance turned out to be very good at doping, combined with his natural talent and started winning. That some punk American, from Texas no less, was winning their little bike race peeved the Euros no end. Hence the vendetta against Lance, while Euro riders were doing the same and worse. Now Lance made it far worse by lying and filing libel lawsuits, but still I can understand the original motivation.

Exactly. Why does a public monopsony need to advertise? So we don’t let UPS handle the snail-mail we’re no longer sending?
And this begs an even larger question: why do we allow public agencies like the USPS and IRS to behave as if they are private companies?
Like ‘immigration reform’ and Detroit, put ‘em at the end of a long line (Dept. of Energy, Education, etc.) and let ‘em die.
In the other America I would agree. Who knows in this Banana Republic but as much as I don't like LA the PO got much publicity & they should put this to rest.
If they gave him $41 mil. when they can’t even maintain home delivery, the Postmaster is the one on drugs.
I think that if Lance had won one or two TdF titles no one would have noticed he was cheating. When it was seven, and with the sociopathic behavior he exhibited in winning them, he made himself a target.
I think the fact that no one has been a repeat winner since then (i.e. without getting busted like Contador did after his second win) is not just a coincidence. One-and-done champions won’t face the same scrutiny.
If you have a sport where the difference between brutal effort for almost no money and brutal effort for millions of dollars is the contents of a syringe, people will take the contents of the syringe.
The incentives are misaligned. When one person gets all the money and all the glory, the push to be that one person is intense.
I too blame the post office for the lines and the shortage of Johnny Cash stamps!
The fallacy is saying this group are the “good guys” and that group are the “bad guys” when there are no “good guys” or “bad guys”. Just a bunch of human beings functioning in a competitive environment.
Lance is a jerk and a proven liar but that doesn’t make him the devil incarnate. And the people lined up against Lance aren’t angels.
Somehow we never seem to be able to rid ourselves of the mythology that is sports and those that play them.
