Alabama executed a convicted murderer on Thursday who prisoners' rights groups said was mentally ill.
Andrew Reid Lackey, 29, was put to death by lethal injection at Holman Prison in Atmore, Alabama, prison officials said. It was the state's first execution since 2011. Lackey was convicted of killing Charlie Newman, an 80-year-old World War Two veteran in Athens, Alabama.
Andrew Reid Lackey, who was executed by Alabama on Thursday, was prescribed multiple psychotropic drugs, according to the Equal Justice Initiative.
Lackey made no statement before his execution, according to prison officials. He was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. local time (7:25 p.m. ET). Newman's grandson had told Lackey that his grandfather had a vault filled with gold bars, according to court documents.
On a 911 recording from Newman's home, the veteran's last words were, "Come sit down and let me pray for you." He was trying to calm Lackey, who was a close friend of his grandson, according to court record.

29 years old.....in Kalifornia, they’re on death row doing the appeals thing longer than that.
An execution deferred, messaging that life is cheap, means that in many places folks who had not yet repented but are murdered will go into eternity lost. So, underscoring the value of life means that the potential salvation of many souls is better than the potential salvation of one soul.
For the sake of discussion, let’s say Lackey suffered from a true mental illness and he was not responsible for his actions when he murdered an elderly man.
I contend they would be responsible for the for the murder of Mr. Newman as well as the execution of Lackey. This is the price paid because the rights of the mentally ill ( ie forced treatment) outweigh the rights of the Mr. Newman to live.
Those who are certifiable ought to be locked up - for our protection and theirs.
I am fairly certain that some of it is brought on and/or made worse by the drugs used to treat it. I am very wary of pill pushers and I think there are plenty of people in the head-shrinking business who are mentally ill themselves. Like some cops, they’ve just managed to be the ones on the outside of the bars.
The people in the “helping” professions who let these nutcases loose out of “compassion” for them ought to be held partially liable for some of the damage they do. They should first ask themselves if they’d want the person living next door to them.
Capital punishment. This is one of the very few areas where I’m in agreement with the liberal left, but for vastly different reasons.
I’m against capital punishment. The major political reason is that it is dangerous in the hands of those who are evil - like the current administration. Are you willing to take the chance that Zippy, Holder, et al will not declare you to be mentally ill because you disagree with them? We’ve seen how *responsible* they are with the power of the IRS, EPA, TSA, ....
I don’t want a corrupt government having the power of life and death over me, my family, my friends, conservatives, Christians, etc. If that means keeping a few murderers in prison rather than executing them, I’m willing to do so. Not saying that heinous murderers don’t deserve the death penalty, just saying that I don’t want the government to have that power and make those decisions.

The number who would not be executed due to lacking the mental capacity to repent is small enough that execution of the remainder would provide deterrence to those capable of being deterred.
As for those not capable of being deterred, executing that small remainder would not deter them.
The problem with illnesses like schizophrenia is that they tend to be episodic. When the illness is not aflicting you, you are perfectly normal. When you are not, you are basically delusional and in severe cases are capable of hurting others and yourself. Unfortunately, there's no way of telling when the attacks are going to come.
Execution is not much of a deterrence that prevents additional murders as attested to by many studies.
I am not arguing for deterrence. I’m arguing for cultural insistence that life is sacred and the taking of a life requires a life. I’m arguing that a culture that devalues life will get more murder and a culture that insists on the value of life will get less. That is beyond deterrence. It is about the world view in which one is raised.
But there is that 0% Recidivism rate.
