He has more common sense than his father.
Keeper Quote,
Into permanent storage it is
“I never give to any charities. I’ll consider it when the government stops confiscating half of my income (combined taxes) at the margin.”....
Seems you are already “giving to a charity” since the gubmint is taking your money (including mine and numerous others) and “giving” it to millions of people who willfully take it without having ever earned it.
Andrew Carnegie had the right idea...endow public libraries for the betterment of people rather than just giving the poor money. The old “teach a man to fish” argument still works. Giving money to people does nothing but teach sloth and breed resentment.
“A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, including some belonging to public and university library systems. 1,689 were built in the United States, 660 in Britain and Ireland, 125 in Canada, and others in Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, the Caribbean, Mauritius and Fiji.”
More or less the same here. Most of my charity is to one time ‘causes’ so I am not able to write them off ie: I recently gave money to our local firefighters who were doing a ‘fill the boot’ for the families of the firefighters killed from Prescott Az. Before that it was to a family of one of our local firefighters whose little girls was killed in an auto accident.
I get a much better feeling from knowing exactly who I am helping and exactly where my money is going.
Wildlife refuges have signs “Don’t feed the animals” so as to avoid causing dependence, but we ignore that when giving out food stamps, and charity to humans.
Good post
Nice quote.
But "wealth" is not a pile of money, it is an investment-revenue stream. When you spend the pile of money, you end the investment-revenue stream.
When Lefites get hold of a pile of money, they spend it, and when it is gone they start looking for more piles of money that other people own that they can steal.
Lefties destroy "wealth" because they don't see money as a tool for building things, but as a way of getting free stuff, since the stuff you buy with money that you didn't earn is "free."
As long as Lefties are in control, abject poverty followed by state-sponsored mass murder will be our ultimate collective destiny.
He is correct.
Just look at the failures and costs of LBJ’s War on Poverty:

"Conscience laundering" is a great term for what's being done by the very wealthy and their foundations, in their efforts to 'help the poor'.
Good point.
re: “There will always be a need for some sort of charity, but it should not be a governmental function. It should be local and personal.”
Totally agree that charity should be private, not government mandated.
In the Bible, in the Old Testament law, people who owned property and grew crops were not to harvest the crop from every square foot of it - they were to leave the corners unharvested. Also, any of the crop that fell to the ground while they were harvesting, they were to leave it there. Why? So that the poor could harvest the corners and any of the crop that fell. This was how God wanted Israel to take care of its own.
What’s interesting is that the poor still had to go get it. They had to do some work of their own to eat. I think God was not only providing for the poor, but by the very act of manually doing work in getting the food themselves also gave a person some integrity. They weren’t just “begging”.
Leviticus 23:22
When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 23:21-23
Deuteronomy 24:19
When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
Deuteronomy 24:18-20
Deuteronomy 24:21
When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.
Fair point. At the point of a gun, mind you...but I have, over the years, "given" hundreds of thousands of dollars to others in the form of entitlement programs and welfare.
Aren't I lucky that the government knew how to spend that money better than I did? If I'd spent it on myself, my family, and my friends it would have been such a waste, not to mention greedy of me.
Give that man a cigar! He seems to understand that”One Size Fits All”doesn’t work!Throwing ever more increasing sums of money at problems doesn’t SOLVE the “Source”of The Problem! This is as basic as”Give A Man A Fish/Teach A Man To Fish”!!
"A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him,"
There is a difference between someone being rob and someone who cause their own suffering.
"Pro 11:12 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour:"
Or more directly...
The Second Great Command
And the second is like, namely this,
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is none other commandment greater than these.
Mark 12:31
When in Nepal many hears ago a beggar came up and showed me a bill for treatment, for which be needed money. He asked me for 200 rupees or so. I gave him a 100 rupee bill. He crumbled it in his hand and threw it over the railing. He must not have needed it.
Ever since that incident, I look at handouts differently. The people most in need will never ask for any money, and should they receive any, they will be thankful for it.
