Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream.
Survey data exclusive to The Associated Press points to an increasingly globalized U.S. economy, the widening gap between rich and poor and loss of good-paying manufacturing jobs as reasons for the trend.
The findings come as President Barack Obama tries to renew his administration's emphasis on the economy, saying in recent speeches that his highest priority is to "rebuild ladders of opportunity" and reverse income inequality.
Hardship is particularly on the rise among whites, based on several measures. Pessimism among that racial group about their families' economic futures has climbed to the highest point since at least 1987. In the most recent AP-GfK poll, 63 percent of whites called the economy "poor."

Imagine how tough it’s going to be finding a job in America in October when the Republicans give us “11 million” brand new “valedictorians” out there looking for jobs.
I wish he could have but I don’t think he could and we will never know. The best that has been done for the last 50 years is to have brief periods of rest from the decline begun by the “Great Society”. This may not be the root our foundation but certainly cemented it.
Our destruction seems to be inevitable now.
I keep wondering why nobody will challenge this guy. He won by fraud yet the republicans sit on their hands. Why do all the democrats march in lock step? Why is everyone so afraid of him?
It’s just like Hitler and Stalin and Castro and all the rest of the dictators. Are all the politicians afraid they’ll be made to disappear in the middle of the night? For him to have this much power there is someone or some “thing” giving him this power.
No, that's why we need a clearcut two party system instead of the Dem and Dem lite system in place now.
