Most here don’t see that.
We will pay for them one way or another.

Nowhere in that picture do I see a representative from McDonald’s pointing a gun to their heads to work for them or die.

The automation of many industries will create an interesting problem. When enough people are unemployed or on welfare what will we do? They’ll vote for free stuff and get it as the majority.

If we don't start having our human pet population fixed now, obviously the USA will go bankrupt. There will be city riots hours after the EBT cards fail to be recharged. It will be a mess. Conservatives need to buy weapons and ammo, not because the jackboots are coming, but because the city slickers will make violent runs for the countryside. They need to be contained on their reservations, and to fight it out amongst themselves.

We could use a video war game to practice: the city slicker leftist takers leaving their insect pods vs. the armed country conservative producers. For the most part it will be shooting fish in a barrel, except the fish will keep coming.

It sounds a lot like Space Invaders.

Botulism and salmonella cases should drop dramatically.

It's not difficult to find someone to push some buttons on a register and say, "You want fries with that?"

Wanna bet?

Getting them to show up, on time, as scheduled, clean, sober & polite is what gives managers at some "fast food" restaurants gray hair.

In our area you often see fast food places staffed with "gray hair brigade". They are a bit slower and not as computer savvy. However, they do know how to make change, smile and be polite and show up for work on time. Too bad many of their grandkids have never learned those lessons.

You're right, of course. However, I suspect that those who walked out are no treasure and could be replaced by someone no worse than they.

In the pictures I've seen of these "walk outs" so far, it doesn't look like te gray hair brigade is participating. Guess we'll know more as the day goes on.

Give them the raise and cut their hours to ten or less per week.

When I was growing up, fast food jobs were for teenagers looking for pocket money and retired people looking to something to do during the day that also supplemented their social security check. That notion that a grown adult would want to work there for a career (unless they wanted to quickly learn the ropes so they could purchase a franchise of their own) was unthinkable.

Why all the contempt for people actually working a job?
Has anyone on this thread ever worked in fast food? I have. It’s physically exhausting.

And you geniuses so dismissive of the brain power of fast food workers would be fired off your first shift, because if you work the drive-through window, you have to be able to make change in your head. Most people in loftier professions can’t. I know this from experience.

Guess people who hate their jobs or are insecure about their own positions in the socioeconomic rat race need to smug it up toward people in hats and poly uniforms. Whatever makes you feel better...

Oh, but don’t you know? Those mocking them believe they are oh-so-superior. (In their own minds) These are the types that would go to the drive thru, order a soda, and then throw the soda in the face of the attendant and drive away laughing.

At a drive-through window, you add up the ticket (with the register) as they order, then before they actually arrive at your window, you take the next order. You don’t know what bills you’re going to be handed from the car three cars back.

When they get to the window, you look at the receipt tape, tell them their total, and make change from the twenty or the ten or whatever they hand you.

At the counter, the register makes change for the employees, but at lots of older fast food window set-ups, you have to make change in your head.

Are you seriously making that big of a deal out of the ability to make change? I understand that it is somewhat of a lost art, but I used to supervise kids working in a concession stand. I taught them all to make change on their first shift with me. I don’t remember any kids that didn’t learn; but if adults cannot learn to make change they are certainly not worth even what they are making now.

Yes I have worked fast food, it is harder work than most people think but I don’t remember being exhausted. Of course I have worked hard all my life and have worked many jobs that are far harder than fast food work. I don’t put anyone down for working jobs like that, I know many that had to start in those jobs at different stages of their life. I worked fast food in college when it was a fairly new concept and I do respect people that work in fast food because at least they are working.

“Are you seriously making that big of a deal out of the ability to make change?”

Yes. Because most people can’t do it. They can’t figure out a simple percentage tip on a restaurant bill, either.

And I never thought fast food was a soft job, not if you work a long shift, because you’re on your feet constantly. We weren’t allowed to sit down or even lean, except on a ten-minute break.

IMHO, While it has become the ‘norm’ for men and women to choose a position of ‘Server’ as a career field with the intentions of providing a livelihood for raising a family and providing a home, car[s], etc; this is not acceptable. This is a cop-out for not seeking a profession that does have a higher pay scale. Serving in a food establishment has historically been a means of providing a part-time job for students and others who needed funds for dues, etc.

As for the argument that server needs to be making a salary equal to someone working in an office environment, etc., the Server has the means of making additional money thru what is known as TIPS. Now, TIPS is not a guarantee; it is an Acronym meaning: “To Insure Promptness”…
It’s gotten to the point of ridiculousness when you patronize an establishment where you virtually serve your own self, but a Server will bring you silverware or a drink and thereby expect a 15% -20% TIP…. If I can select my own food, I can certainly pick up my silver ware and drink like any other establishment.

Today’s argument of raising their salary to $15.00 per hour above their $7.30[?] per hour is crazy. A server should be able to accommodate 3-4 tables per hour, and even on a slow day, should be able to average $4.00 per table [that’s an additional $16.00 per hour; most of which is NOT 100% TAXED].

$7.30 + $16.00 = $23.30/hour…. That’s decent money….I WILL NOT support paying ridiculous prices for meals to support someone who doesn’t want to get a decent paying job….if they aren’t qualified to do so, DO NOT EXPECT ME TO SUPPORT THEM….. I am already overwhelmed with paying for the people on Welfare and Medicaid; just to mention 2 programs….

If the Servers wants a straight salary, then TIPS definitely will go away [at least from me].

Do the ‘striking’ Servers realize that an establishment owner will have to reduce his staff if all the wages are doubled??? That is definitely a likelihood because they are not going to reduce their profits….

Meet Baxter, total hourly cost to own and operate: $5/hour and dropping. Baxter speaks proper English, doesn't take breaks, sleep, call in sick, sue, need healthcare, or spit in whitey's food.

As for tipping in a fast food restaurant, I don’t do it and I have never seen anyone else do it. I do understand what you are saying, I do think if people want to make food service a career they need to move from fast food to service restaurants where tips are possible. In any case I do see fast food as a stepping stone and people should plan to move on to make more money. I don’t see any way it can possibly be a career, if fast food is forced to pay a living wage they will have to automate or close. Those protesting will lose their jobs if they win this battle.
