Citing George Zimmerman's Acquittal As a Reason to Repeal 'Stand Your Ground' Laws Is a Non Sequitur
Reason Magazine's Hit and Run ^ | July 29, 2013 | Jacob Sullum

Today Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin's mother, said she believed Florida's "stand your ground" self-defense law "assisted the person who killed my son to get away with murder." She did not explain how, which is hardly surprising, since George Zimmerman's defense was not based on the absence of a duty to retreat for people attacked in public places. Rather, it was a classic self-defense claim that could have been successful in any state. Fulton nevertheless insists "we have to change these laws so people don't get away with murder."

It is not hard to understand why a grieving mother might want to give her son's death some meaning by tying it to a broader cause, no matter how illogical the connection. But the leaders of the National Bar Association (NBA), the African-American lawyers' group that sponsored the event in Miami at which Fulton spoke, surely know better. They nevertheless are throwing their support behind a campaign to repeal "stand your ground" laws, citing Martin's shooting as justification. "Stand your ground laws must fall," says NBA President John E. Page. "It is time to stand up—stand up against 'stand your ground' laws and stand up in the memory of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, and so many others whose killings were carried out by gun violence and justified by these senseless laws. We must not allow anyone to succumb to violence at the hands of vigilantes who devalue human life."

When The Miami Herald's Marc Caputo pointed out that Zimmerman could have successfully used exactly the same defense before Florida's "stand your ground law" was enacted in 2005, Page replied, "Why do you need the law then? There is a common-law right to protect yourself."(continued)

The author shouldn’t try to understand Sabrina Fulton, Tracy Martin, the dream defenders, the Al Sharptons, etc.....they all got their marching orders from Obama and Holder. Attack Stand your Ground laws.

It's a whole lot easier to understand when taking in account that Sabrina worked for the Miami-Dade County Government.

She had the Racial Grievance Committee on speed dial.

I’ve seen data that shows black people successfuly use the “Stand Your Ground” law more than any other race. It is likely because of the inner city environment. In any case, if we get rid of ‘Stand Your Ground’ it will certainly mean even more blacks in prison. The civil rights community is really confused right now as the high black prison population is also one of their issues. Basically, they don’t know what they want. I personally think they want it to be 1950 again..that’s just me, thought.

Actually, I think it’s helpful. The masks are coming off for the general public to see.

Ms.Fulton and Mr.Martin, and their legal team combined with a no longer trusted news media, have all but exhausted their usefull idiot roles.

Very few people are buying their schtick.

No way will she admit that her baby tried to beat someone to death. They really seem to believe that getting hurt feelings is an excuse for anything.

In the absence of “Stand your ground” laws are the requirement of “Retreat from evil” laws. That puts everything in the real perspective. If you are required to retreat in situations where police are not required to retreat, then common people are stripped of their ability to confront the wrong doers. If you tackle a mugger, and it goes bad, are you liable for their death if you defend yourself?

Florida’s old law was that if threatened with deadly force, you needed to tuck your tail between your legs and scoot the other way, or be arrested. SYG changed that. Now the beneficiaries irrationally want the old way back. Duh.

What these people really want is to be able to threaten you, and have you get out of their way whether you are armed or not.

The behavior of self defense will never change, the results will simply get buried if it’s made illegal. This should be obvious to the left and the political class, but they are completely oblivious.

Many of the people like Morgan bashing Zimmerman obviously have an anti-gun agenda. They don’t like or accept the fact that American citizens are allowed to be armed. Would all the race-baiters and various parasites be happy if instead of using a gun, Zimmerman had in fact been an accomplished martial arts fighter and killed Martin with a well-placed punch or kick? Somehow, I doubt it.

Too bad Martin’s mother didn’t spend the same amount of time on keeping HER KID out of trouble, perhaps he would still be alive had she. Instead, NOW she comes forward.

Wasn’t she the one who LEFT the kids for the father to raise? Some “mother” she was/is

The day will come when the liberals will get their way and it will be ILLEGAL to stop someone (of color) from killing you. I guess the black man is an endangered species like the darter snail.

As I posted elsewhere, what these black leaders want is an Enabling Act for criminals. Remember why SYG and castle doctrine laws were passed in the first place—to prevent attackers from suing civilly if they were hurt in attempting a crime.

I had the "Discussion" before I was a teenager...no fighting and no arguing with cops.

The only "discussion" I see evidence of from this "parent?"

"Don't let them get in your face!"

Odd that blacks - who overwhelmingly are the violent criminals of our culture (as a percent of population) would favor a law that STOPS victims from being able to defend themselves.

Only makes sense when you think of Trayvon's daddy as being a former gang member...
