82 lawmakers ask for end to ban on gay men donating blood
The Hill ^ | 08/05/13 | Ramsey Cox

More than 80 lawmakers have called on the Obama administration to allow gay men to donate blood.

The lawmakers say the administration should change what they say is an "outdated" policy.

Eighty-two lawmakers in the House and Senate signed on to the letter, including Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). Enzi was the only Republican to sign the letter.

They said Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should re-evaluate blood donation criteria that ban gay men from donating blood for life.

I’d be Gallon Club except I was stationed in Germany in the 1980’s and later they decided that meant I was exposed to mad cow disease, so I can’t donate anymore. I keep going back to the Bloodmobile but that stupid rule hasn’t changed.

Yes. Mad Cow covers most of Europe and really hurts would-be military blood donors. But it’s a real concern, along with a lot of other geographically-related blood-transmitted diseases. Can’t be too careful with the blood supply.

I wish we had a blood screening test for politicians. Eliminate those blood-sucking PC collectivists in a hurry!

I recommend my FReeper brothers and sisters bank their own blood. There is a NYC company which does this and can store your blood for 10-20 years, and ship it anywhere within 24 hours should you need it for surgery. Here is their site: www.idant.com

You can donate to your own private blood bank. I would advise this.

Yes, I agree. But the purpose of autologous donations is almost always in anticipation of a planned surgery or other medical procedure. Your blood is stored at a predetermined facility and prepped (thawed) before in anticipation for the event.

But unforeseen traumatic injuries are, by far, the usual call for blood transfusions, and you're only an unanticipated accident away from needing this. You can't be sure you'll be in the vicinity of your own blood when it happens. And even preserved blood has a shelf life; you'll have to continually donate regularly for yourself to make sure the supply is current and viable.

I'm not dissing your suggestion, just pointing out its limits.

“if it saves just a single life to keep the ban in place, then isn’t it worth it?”

hmmm... that sounds sort of familiar....

True. See my last post. That company freezes the blood so it is good for years past the 35-42 day limit. It takes 60-90 minutes to defrost if you are close by and your hospital permits it.

If you donate your own blood autologously for your own later use, you’ll be labeled a “hater.” Watch and see.

We’re already “haters” for locking our car doors, according to Homobama.

I have been in situations where blood transfusion was necessary. If you have a system of labels I wouldn’t give a tinkers damn as to the integrity of such a system. I believe that there are enough homos in the medical profession that they would mislabel for their own constituency’s benefit. Best is just to not have any tainted blood in the transfusion world.

I like the sound of stocking up your own blood. But I have to wonder if that would be an extra cost to the hospital to access it, thaw it, etc. because if it is, say goodbye to that option after Obamacare takes effect.

I seem to recall that, in the late 1980s, there was some teen boy who died of AIDS he had contracted through a blood transfusion. The first name was Ryan, I am pretty sure, and the last name may have been White.

Did not read this piece, to be honest, but why do these clowns think someone else cannot become infected this way?

My point is simply that were these Members (or their own family members) subject to the gamble of receiving possibly tainted blood they would not be so quick to encouraging its being put into the blood banks.

I spent 3 months over the past season trying to give blood but was always rejected because my iron count was half-a point or a single point below the requirement. To the best of their ability blood banks properly screen for and accept only ‘healthy’ blood. Pressure from influential/well funded groups should not even be a consideration. Shame on the pols who are promoting this.

It’s all designed to shove the “homo-normative” delusion upon us. They want to force us to embrace queerdom.

Label the donations as from Homosexual or non-Homosexual

Make sure you ask for non-homo blood before you go in.

Oh wait, that is profiling.

Plan B: stay healthy, don’t require surgery. And if you do and have time before hand, self donate.

Let me guess... Congresscritters will be exempt from this as well...

Irrelevant, as they are blood suckers, not donors.

Stupid, stupid idea. I checked the CDC’s own numbers on this a couple years back. Gay and Bisexual Men account for 47 times as many new cases of HIV and Syphilis than straight men and most other demographics.

Yes, our testing has gotten better since 1983. But no testing method is foolproof. And it is simply not sound medicine to accept donations from a demographic that is nearly 50 times as likely to test positive for HIV and syphilis, which is also a potentially deadly disease.

The counterargument I would propose to these congressfolks would be this: If we are to allow gay men to donate blood when those risks are so high, then why not remove ALL restrictions? Surely those same screening tests will be just as effective against IV drug users, prostitutes or men who have been with prostitutes, and anyone who originally hails from certain Sub-Saharan African nations?

Better safe than sorry!

I donated five pints to myself prior to cancer surgery and they were never used. All five pints wound up being dumped as they don't/didn't do rigorous testing for autologous donations. I was 53 and had never donated blood before, I waited out the five year waiting period for a clearance to donate and have been donating ever since. I'm a couple of pints away from six gallons, I did platelets for a while but my doctor said to stick to whole blood. I didn't like the extra wait between donations for platelets and giving whole blood helps keep my BP in line.

GtG

**82 lawmakers**

Then they can be the first in line to get gay transfusions.
