NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Four former Vanderbilt football players have been indicted on five counts of aggravated rape each of an unconscious 21-year-old student at a campus dormitory in June.

Safety Cory Batey, 19 of Nashville, Tenn.; defensive back Brandon Banks, 19, of Brandywine, Md.; receiver Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie, 19, of Woodville, Miss.; and tight end Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio, Calif. also have been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery for an incident tipped to campus officials by surveillance video. Vandenburg also is charged with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful photography.

While the players were indicted Friday, the district attorney general pointed out that the investigation isn't over yet.

"Although four people are being charged at this time, the investigation is still on-going into the actions of other individuals and the role(s) they may have played in this incident," District Attorney General Torry Johnson said in a statement.

Vanderbilt dismissed the players June 29 and barred them from the campus pending the investigation. Vice chancellor Beth Fortune said Friday that their first thoughts are for the victim, a Vanderbilt student, and that the university will continue to offer her all of its services and support.

The subject matter is rape. When reporting things pertaining to it, nicknames aren’t appropriate.

It’s a grave matter, and only formal names should be used.

That’s my take on it. It’s okay for you to disagree.

..... and tight end Brandon Vandenburg, 20,

Well, he will still hold that position in prison, but it will have another meaning :-)

That’s actually a great example.

People reading an important article should be able to know precisely what SoCal references. Are you talking about a region or a school? If the discussion is about a serious crime involving a young woman, I think it’s important to use more precision.

Get a grip? LOL

It is a heightened matter as it involves the program.

I’m not being politically correct, these kids at class A div 1 are under a scope. That scope belongs to the leadership of every school.

Who knows. They’re alleged crimes at this point. After what I’ve been through (and researched, and read, and researched, and read), I don’t assume much anymore.

It does seem they have photos from the one kid’s phone though.

I just find the headline sort of misleading. Not the “Vandy” part, but the “ex” part. I agree with the one poster - sort of - I think it leads one to think they weren’t on the team when the incidents occurred.

If you just read the headline, you could think it was 4 alumni stock brokers on Wall St.

Well, if you ever get confused about the “Vandy” region, I’m sure there are plenty to guide you.

This is what they call a party at Vandy... okay I walked right into that one.

Seriously. It’s wicked. Of course. We got so much wickedness today that we’ve forgotten what goodness is.

Vandy is known as a academic school. Guess these guys left their brains on the playing field. If I had to guess 3 out of the 4 were white.

“It’s a grave matter, and only formal names should be used...”

Gotta agree with you. The title struck me wrong too. And, you can believe these rapists were not “informally” charged with rape...they were formally charged. In addition, I’ll bet the defense attorney addresses the judge as “Your Honor”...not “yo, dude”.

And, it really is to weep. Spiritual light is dying out, spiritual darkness creeps. Nashville itself is a fascinating study in spiritual contrasts. It’s got some of the deepest Christian blessings as a bible belt city, and it’s also intensely haunted with raw wickedness.

All the academics in the world can’t make up for a spiritual deficit. This is a situation that is ultimately tied to individual people. God’s wooing a world of deaf and blind people.

Some nitpicking and general ruminations (a bit off the beaten path, maybe, but) :

(1) How did the surveillance camera see what was taking place inside a dorm room? The authorities were looking for something else, and just “accidentally” discovered an alleged rape?

(Given the recent concerns about a Big Brother state,
that explanation sounds chilling.”Yeah, we weren’t looking for YOU; so we didn’t have a warrant; but we just happened to notice something suspicious while we were lawfully looking for something else...”)

(2) Whenever I read that the media has a policy not to name rape victims, I have to ask why it names the accused before they are convicted. I’m assuming these guys
are guilty; but too many names get wrecked by media frenzy (think Duke lacrosse).

We vehemently agree?

Anyhow, the popular equation of “intelligence” with “wisdom” is another devil’s lie.
