Disturbing Details in Teen Taser Death [An attempt to create a hispanic Trayvon]

At just 17, Israel Hernandez-Llach was already an award-winning artist, on the threshold of acclaim in Miami Beach art circles. He was a sculptor, painter, writer and photographer whose craft was inspired by his home country of Colombia and his adopted city, Miami.

He was also a graffiti artist, known as "Reefa," who sprayed colorful splashes of paint on the city's abandoned buildings while playing cat-and-mouse with cops, who, like many property owners, consider graffiti taggers to be vandals, not artists.

It was while spray-painting a shuttered McDonald's early Tuesday morning that Hernandez-Llach was chased down by Miami Beach police and shot in the chest with a Taser. He later died.

Tasers save lives, but the criminal-coddling FReepers think it's too much for their petty criminal buddies.

I agree and think we should go back to batons.

Unbelievable that FReepers are defending fascism and cop lawlessness.

The lawlessness is coming purely from teenage punks out roaming the streets in the middle of the night.

I'm sure these gentleman artistes would never THINK of committing any other type of crime.

It won’t go anywhere. No Jesse Jackson or Sharpton’s like people in
The Hispanic community.

I'm all for the baton however won't happen. Those days are forever gone. The media is too quick to say taser killed _____. The ME’s report has to come back. Usually it is the combined abuse of Drugs/ Alcohol/enlarged heart with stress of resisting or fleeing that causes the death. Not the taser.

I’m not for one second defending the defacing of public property.

I don’t think vandalism warrants a death sentence, which is what the kid got. Do you?

Well, you’ve already convicted the cops, cops who use tasers routinely to subdue fleeing suspects.

I posted a thread on this event right when it first happened, a couple days ago, and noted it was not good that the kid died. There is no way the cop would know that there would be that kind of reaction—tasers are not, despite your assertions, meant to kill people.

They are meant to control them—and in rare cases, people have reactions and die. They aren’t bullets.

“cops who use tasers routinely to subdue fleeing suspects.”

And that’s the problem. Taser use is not supposed to be “routine” per the regulations in almost every city and town in the country. And not for “compliance” and not to “subdue fleeing suspects.” It’s illegal. ONLY if you are assaulted or your life is threatened. That is the standard for taser use.

“tasers are not, despite your assertions, meant to kill people.”

I never said they are meant to kill people. I said the irrefutable evidence is in — look at the death rate — that they DO kill people. I guess we can argue about what constitutes “rare.”

But I remember and so do you in the back of your mind — there was this death we’re discussing, and that death last year, and a couple of deaths the year before — not terrorists or vicious criminals. Instead drunks or petty crooks or developmentally disabled or deaf people who had run-ins with impatient bully cops with itchy taser trigger fingers — and paid for it with their lives. “Rare” taser deaths are still patently wrong and shame us all.
