The Myth of the Mexican Work Ethic
American Thinker ^ | 08/11/2013 | Jeremy Egerer

Posted on 08/11/2013 7:55:26 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

There are two kinds of men that this article will necessarily offend. The first, and most obvious, is the kind of man who honestly believes in an exceptional Mexican work ethic -- the man who attempts to befriend or utilize the Mexican population to prove himself not to be a racist, to acquire their votes, or to unfairly associate himself with qualities belonging to others.

But the second kind of man, in my opinion, deserves to be offended far more than the rest, for, hoping to find an essay about the laziness of Mexicans, what he is actually going to find is an essay about the foolishness of white Americans.

Being half-Hispanic, I have always heard, since as far back as I can remember, that Mexicans have a superior work ethic -- that they move quickly, and do much, and complain never. I do not necessarily debate these claims concerning the migrant laborer, but if I were to assert that these characteristics belonged to Mexicans as a whole, I believe I would do both Mexicans and Americans a disfavor.

In a sense, the claim is correct: Mexicans can be said to do the jobs avoided by whites, for less pay, and at a faster pace. Anyone at least remotely familiar with agricultural labor knows that whites largely avoid it, and that they avoid it because it is too difficult for the pay given. If we begin with this premise, that the pay is not enough to attract white people into this brand of heavy labor, we begin with a very sensible observation: that what is preferable to one man is not preferable to another.

I have seen Mexican roofers roof a large house in one day that took white roofers a week and a half on a similar house. They worked from sunup to sundown, not 10 to 4:30.

The best house cleaners I have ever had were Mexican too.

Excellent piece¡ Nobody can understand the history of Mexico without understanding the history of their final indigenous rulers, the Aztecs. The Aztecs were cruel, ruthless and brutal. They built their civilisation on slave labor, superior organization and military power.

More and more agricultural machinery is replacing hand labor.

I guess the Mexicans would have made better slaves than the Blacks.

From the article:

...I have met one truly exceptional Mexican worker in my entire life, a man who personally trained me to work hard and be proud of doing so. To him, I mean no insult: he and all others like him are deserving of honor. But if we call his ethic Mexican, and not personal, I believe we rob him of his glory and grant it to others unfairly...

The author is calling BS to the so-called Mexican Work Ethic.

I don’t think anybody makes a good slave, you work best when it is something you want to do

I roofed on a house with 3 mexican workers once. In the amount of time it took me to lay down 9.66 square of shingles the three mexicans layed down 17.5 together. I have also been on jobs where the mexicans worked just as fast and hard as I.

I have also done vineyard working right along side of mexican workers that were slower than I and some that were faster than I.

I have no problem working long hours as well. My wife once yelled at me that I was working to many hours because I worked 129 hour that week. The next week was better at 126 hours.

Point is that mexican workers are just like you and I. Some will work hard and some won’t. Just a fact of life.

Usually the theme is: “Who’s going to pick your fruits and veggies” since white folks don’t like doing farm labor.

I guess we could ask the people in the hotel industry who works better...native-born Americans or Hispanic or Mexican immigrants and/or citizens? Because no matter where we go in the U.S., it seems the great majority of people who clean the rooms are Hispanics. It seems, without having any direct proof, that most of them appear to be of Mexican or Latin American origins. I would think most of them are either American citizens or here legally. But I rarely see lily-white, European-looking people cleaning the rooms in most of the places we stay at on our trips. Even in northern climes.

Here I’ll say it. As a rule (and OF COURSE there are exceptions) - Mexicans work harder, faster then whites who work harder faster than blacks. Call me a raciss - I don’t care - facts is facts.

I think it’s terrible to stereotype a ethnic class of people. I teach my kids not to do it, and I try to correct coworkers around the water cooler every chance I get when they slip and utter some ridiculous slur.

Having said that, Why did the Mexican Army have only 600 men at the Alamo?

White people don’t do those jobs because they are eligible for welfare / unemployment. Illegals come from countries that don’t have welfare programs so they have to work.

White people would do those jobs if we got rid of welfare.

Also, illegals will stop doing those jobs when they become eligible for welfare.

Those jobs will then be done by another group of immigrants who are not yet eligible for welfare.

Why did the Mexicans within the Alamo’s walls have so few?

I must have seen that same roofing crew.

On a high peak roof with one guy sliding the shingles down to the install guy with a nailgun.

Like he was dealing cards in a casino...unreal.

Bingo!

Most people (regardless of their origins) don’t have much of a work ethic now. Why should they when non-workers have the same the lifestyle on welfare?

Not everyone is driven to succeed. If they have food, shelter, a little spending money, and a lot of free time, that’s enough for a lot of people.
