Fukushima's Radioactive Water Leak: What You Should Know
National Geographic ^ | 7 August, 2013 | Patrick J. Kiger

Tensions are rising in Japan over radioactive water leaking into the Pacific Ocean from Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a breach that has defied the plant operator's effort to gain control.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday called the matter “an urgent issue” and ordered the government to step in and help in the clean-up, following an admission by Tokyo Electric Power Company that water is seeping past an underground barrier it attempted to create in the soil. The head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority task force told Reuters the situation was an "emergency."

They are good! I still remember the day my dad caught a 2-3/4 pounder that was 17" long when I was a kid. My favorite though, is pan fried bluegill large enough to fillet. I like most all fish, and there are tricks to making almost any tasty.

Water here in the south is too warm for northern fish, but we do have strippers in Toledo Bend caught close to 50 lbs. Not very good eating though, IMO.

Yep, each lake is different, and here, each lake has a sign with recommendations. The chart was all I could find on the subject.

You should see the video of the chick on a crotch-rocket making a trip to Chernobyl. Very interesting. I don't have a link, but if you search Youtube, you might find it.

And I just read about some radioactive hogs (presumably from Chernobyl) turning up in Italy, of all places.

Yeah, I agree that is nothing, but on the other hand you see reports where the levels are thousands of times higher. Part of the problem is the great variations and confusion. I miss the days of trusted and accurate news from the main stream media and scientific publications. It tends to make one believe the false information is being released is for a purpose.

Thanks, but my first question is what government organization made this chart? I’d like to see a clearer picture of it.

Are you talking about the mercury chart? It’s from some state DNR - not sure which. Each state is going to be different, and even each lake in a particular state will be different from others. It will give you some idea though of the seriousness, and how different types of fish have different levels of contamination - primarily based on how long they live and what they eat.

From what I read in the Japanese language press they will either be building a higher seawall (by September) and/or more effectively pumping out the contamination to a below legal standard before it reaches shore.

It all eventually seeps into the soil and remains somewhat harmless. I live in Tokyo. I know physics. I studied radioactive contamination. I’m not worried.

The days of trusted and accurate news are indeed pretty much gone. But that is why we have Free Republic, lots of experts to jump in, even if you misspell :)

...with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound...

Feels a bit like I got that wrong, but should be close. I haven’t listened to UFO in a while.

I guess you’re not worried. The seawater is gonna carry a lot of it away from you.

You’d better have it calibrated and understand the way it works and if it detects alpha and gamma radiation, or it will be as useless as a left-handed screwdriver.

Yes, and there were also recent reports questioning why so many of the Hiroshima or Nagasaki victims were so long-lived. To tell you the truth, I don’t know. But I’m thinking the two balls I have are enough..
