What was supposed to be a course on how to use a gun safely, instead, sent a student to a hospital.

Gun instructor Terry Dunlap, 73, who runs a shooting range and training center in Ohio, was demonstrating how to use a gun when his gun fired, hitting his student.

Dunlap gave the class for people in Ohio seeking permits to carry a concealed firearm. Michael Piemonte, and his wife Allison, both 26-years-old, were taking the class in the city of Lancaster in order to get a permit to carry a gun for their own safety.

Negligent discharge from a .38! I assume a revolver. Time for this guy to retire!

Somebody post the video of that black Rambo Cop in the classroom that stood up there and told the class “only he knew how to handle this weapon”....then proceeded to AD it.

Not all ND’s but there are way, way to many of these. Some not funny at all.

Just proves only rednecks, hillbillies and the uneducated use firearms. More reason to ban them, especially CC! /s

Watch for more stories like these to pop up.

But no word yet on that elusive Ben Ghazi...

He doesn’t blame it on that fancy quick draw 511 holster but it seems to me a design that would simultaneously require thumb pressuring in the area of the safety (to enable release of the weapon holster) along with a trigger finger press on a release (again a secondary release of the weapon to the holster) is just plain asking for trouble.

I’ve got several 1911s...most have three safeties of a sort. The real safety (thumb), the grip safety, and a firing pin safety (most modern designs). Add that to your carry-with-you-safety (your trigger finger) and you have a total of FOUR safeties.

Now couple that array of safeties and put in a holster that is supposed to allow you to draw a 1911 quickly but can result in the defeat of two of the 1911 safeties and you have nothing but eventual trouble.

I would not use one of these holsters.

3 simple rules:

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
3. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to shoot. (This rule really cannot apply to Conceal/Carry but it applies at the shooting range.)

I use a pocket holster with a Ruger 38 special revolver. Works nice. I even sleep with it with absolutely no discomfort. I prefer the revolver because of not having to charge the weapon to use it. Does that make it more dangerous? Maybe. I’ve had no problems, but I know to keep my finger away from the trigger. I takes real pressure to pull the double action trigger (there is no hammer at all), but I wouldn’t want a kid to stumble across it, so I keep it in my pocket all the time.

There is no safety.

I could probably argue that a semi-auto pistol with a safety and a need to chamber the round is more safe, but it is also two additional steps before you can fire in an emergency.

Yeah, there's that popular talk about Condition 1, 2, 3 and 4 with semi-autos, but a revolver is always "Condition - Ready" to me....As long as it doesn't have a fixed firing pin resting up near a primer, it's okay for me (e.g., those new cross-bar safeties purists don't like)

To me a well made revolver is a work of art. I happen to believe they are inherently more accurate, especially a 6” barrel.

I have Berettas, lots of 1911s, Glocks etc. and they mostly don’t getting favor as a quality revolver. Except for my pair of Ruger SR1911s and my US ARMY Colt 1911A1(1943)
