Police presence inside a showing of ‘The Butler’ causes outrage
MSNBC's The Grio ^ | August 18, 2013 | Joy-Ann Reid

Washington D.C. woman says a weekend trip to see the movie, “The Butler” was marred by the presence of police inside the theater.

Tiffany Flowers says she and her boyfriend, Alan Hanson, were attending a screening of the Lee Daniels film at the Regal Cinemas Majestic Stadium 20 theater in Silver Spring, Maryland Saturday, when the experience turned sour. She said that after waiting in line and having their tickets double validated, with the second ticket taker just ten feet from the first employee to tear their stubs, she and Hanson approached the theater entrance, only to find a police officer directing people’s movements.

Flowers told theGrio the officer “herded everybody to the right, and then around the corner there’s another police officer, then we round the corner and there’s a third police officer.”

She said the uniformed police who remained inside the theater throughout the show were not in uniform, but dressed in all black with their badges exposed, and wearing bullet-proof vests, and that she later learned they were contracted by the Montgomery County Police Department. The Department did not have a spokesman available on Sunday.

And she said the crowd inside the theater was anything but rowdy.

“I’m 35 [years old] and Alan is 38,” she said. “There was not anyone there who would make you think there would be a possible disturbance.”

Flowers said that she was “seething” over the police presence throughout the film, but didn’t immediately say anything to theater personnel. “You don’t want to play the ‘black card,’ so to speak, and you almost don’t want to feel what you’re feeling, but then everyone around me was talking about feeling racially profiled and saying we don’t need the cops [in order] to see an Oprah flick....

The most probable explanation is that there was a threat phoned into the theater.

And the most probable perp would be.. ?

Sounds like people should stay away from this movie. Either the cops are gonna hassle you or there is a planned terrorist attack.

Stay home. It’ll be out on DVD soon.

I am old enough to remember Al Capp’s SWINE (Students Wildly Indignant [about] Nearly Everything). While not students, this female probably has all of the other characteristics!

Great!
It'll safe and private to ignore it then.
Once the Oprah groupies and the SEIU members ordered to go see it have showed up, attendance will nosedive big time!

They probably had two ideas in mind:

1) Since the movie was tangentially related to Ronald Reagan, that ubiquitous, according to the DHS, “violent right wing extremists” would be in attendance.

2) Then, since black people were looking at a movie tangentially related to Ronald Reagan, that there was a slim possibility that they might be black conservatives, and thus a direct threat of violence, anarchy and “uppetyism” against the administration.

Lots of movies have cops visit. Cops see movie for free, Theater owner gets less vandalism. Same reason why Circle K gives cops free coffee. Bet she hates that too.

Wait? Somebody is made because they were SAFE at the theater?

What the hell is wrong with these people?

BTW, when I learned that Jane Fonda was playing Nancy Reagan I decided I would save my money and wait to watch it on the teevee . . . maybe . . . .

I predict there won’t be riots if it doesn’t get a nomination.

I saw it. I also predict it won’t get a nomination.

"Do I really have to put a sarcasm tag on everything?"

Rhetorical question? Of all the myriad ways the country has changed distinctly and inarguably for the worse since Brokeback "Dingle-Barry" O'Bunghole took office, one of the least affected places has been here on FreeRepublic.

Our hard conservative center has spared us most os the deterioration, but not all...

Don't forget how to laugh, and you'll be just fine.

It will get a nomination whether it deserves it or not.
