Impossible Choices? The Conservatism of "Breaking Bad"
Truth-Out ^ | August 30, 2012 | Michael Corcoran

"Breaking Bad" is a fascinating show. But efforts to compare it to "The Wire," which systematically analyzed American institutions and the American experience, are misguided. "Breaking Bad" is fundamentally a conservative show that is all about the individual.

This Sunday (September 2) AMC will air the final episode of part one of it's fifth and final season of "Breaking Bad," an immensely popular and critically acclaimed show about a down-on-his luck high school chemistry teacher who, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, starts a life as a crystal methamphetamine manufacturer. The high praise of the show is largely warranted: the premise is fascinating, the photography and acting is superb and the drama intense. Some have even dared to suggest that "Breaking Bad" represents the best that modern television has to offer, even surpassing HBO's the "Wire" as the greatest show of its time.

lydia and todd’s people. right now that is my guess. but we can’t forget loose ends like Ted, like the junkyard guys, the lawyer and his guys, the mexican cartel who know what’s going on and know walt and may be regrouping, jesse finding out about walt and mike, even the pest control guys who todd probably isn’t wth anymore...

ricin. not sarin, which is a gas. he made ricin.

and it’s because there’s someone he’s gonna use it on. someone he can physically get to and be close enough to to deploy it in/on something they’d ingest. right now best guess is the lawyer, jesse, or the junkyard guy, because he knows about the rv/hank issue waaaaay back.

with such a big pile and walt not exactly knowing the total, he knows they were going to take some.

but saul thinks about leverage and insurance and it isn’t ecessarily for him to take thge money, but to KNOW where it is in case he needs a bargaining chip with walt, lydia, todd’s guys, and/or the dea.

But I bet a whole lot of people are now hooked on meth because they watched the show, cause meth is like, so cool now, you know.

I actually take Saul as being honest with his clients. He is a co-conspirator, after all.

Best shows on TV are:

Justified, Suits, Major Crimes, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels - in that order. You can always tell a show that has good writers. Will be interesting to see how the death of Elmore Leonard will affect Justified.

What is it with AMC that they can’t afford an extra spotlight for their production sets? All their shows are so dark and murky. Kind of like watching TV against swamp gas. Wish there was an AMC HD channel.

I've never figured out his compulsion on both shows to romp around in his Jockey shorts.

It's not his compulsion, he only does what the script writers say to do. You will notice sometimes on many shows a character seems to do something that is out of character. That is a new writer or a writer on a bad day. Actors only act and seldom go 'Off script.'

You sound like my son. He got me to watch some of Game of Thrones by saying there wasn’t naked sex in every episode. Now he doesn’t understand why I won’t watch Breaking Bad since there isn’t any nakedness and sex in it at all.

From what I’ve learned about Breaking Bad (I actually watched the first episode), it is extremely well written, well constructed, and well acted. But there are just some things I don’t believe I need infecting my mind and Breaking Bad is full of it.

I’ve come to see Saul as one of the more redeemable characters on the show. Sure he’s a sleazbag lawyer... But it turns out he’s really an excellent sleazbag lawyer. Or perhaps better said: he presents himself as a sleazeball, but inside is actually decent person. Every other character is trying to show a decent exterior while they continue to rot from the inside.

The transformation of Walt from the first episode to the last is what makes the show. There really was a decent guy there once, and he has slowly, through thousands of tiny decisions and a few big ones... Evolved into a monster that his old self would never recognize.

I would give kudos to AMC also, for ending the series on a power stroke. Too many series try to run for too long... Long after the writers run out of ideas. Some others are doing that too. Burn Notice is doing it.

I love how Saul got hired. Jesse and Walt kidnap him and are going to kill him and bury him in the desert and he convinces each of them to give him a dollar. At that point the secrets they had revealed to him become privileged and they therefore don't have to kill him.

That's quick thinking under pressure.

And I agree, Burn Notice has totally jumped the shark. My wife watches it and I record it for her, but I haven't been able to stand watching it for a couple of years.

I think Vince Gilligan is just following the natural story arc. And a good story it is.

So, what is Walt planning to do with the M60 and the ricin? I am dying to know.

Try: “http://www.btvguide.com/shows/list-type/a_z";

No guarantee that the episode you are looking for is there yet, though. Try My previous post for an alternative location...

I’ve never seen it, but the most liberal people I know are huge fans. I hope that it really does have a conservative message and that some of it sinks in.
