As Syria War Escalates, Americans Cool to U.S. Intervention: Reuters/Ipsos Poll
Reuters ^ | Saturday, August 24, 2013 | Lesley Wroughton

Americans strongly oppose U.S. intervention in Syria's civil war and believe Washington should stay out of the conflict even if reports that Syria's government used deadly chemicals to attack civilians are confirmed, a Reuters/Ipsos poll says.

About 60 percent of Americans surveyed said the United States should not intervene in Syria's civil war, while just 9 percent thought President Barack Obama should act.

More Americans would back intervention if it is established that chemical weapons have been used, but even that support has dipped in recent days - just as Syria's civil war has escalated and the images of hundreds of civilians allegedly killed by chemicals appeared on television screens and the Internet.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, taken August 19-23, found that 25 percent of Americans would support U.S. intervention if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces used chemicals to attack civilians, while 46 percent would oppose it. That represented a decline in backing for U.S. action since August 13, when Reuters/Ipsos tracking polls found that 30.2 percent of Americans supported intervention in Syria if chemicals had been used, while 41.6 percent did not.

Taken together, the polls suggest that so far, the growing crisis in Syria, and the emotionally wrenching pictures from an alleged chemical attack in a Damascus suburb this week, may actually be hardening many Americans' resolve not to get involved in another conflict in the Middle East.

Obama says: The opinions of the little people do not matter.

He is speaking, of course, about Congress.

This means the news media must redouble its efforts to support Obama's pro-terrorist policy.

Prepare to be bombarded with pictures of dead babies for as long as it takes.

Americans (not enough, unfortunately) are smart enough to understand that Syria hates us and neither side will be our friend, so how can we justify spending one red cent, much less spilling American blood on them?

Besides, it's muzzie killing muzzie, so what could be better? It's the elusive "win-win" situation.

Yes...but in doing so he is making the commie libs admit that Saddam had CW (which everyone knew at the time anyway, but their story then was Bush had lied). I am a contrarian on the Middle East, though. My view is Obamba’s lack of a clue and care is good. Let these places blow up and the dust settle where it will. Putin knows bozo is weak and will stare him down.

My middle east plan involves pulling out of pretty much every middle east nation and parking a carrier group off the Israeli coast if they want it. with maybe another at the southern end of the Suez canal.

China would likely move in to the Persian Gulf but they will alsu inherit all its problems as well.

That would be fun to watch, "But Wait the Chinese would be far more ruthless than the U.S." you say.

Yes, and so were the Soviets, and you see how well that turned out for them.

I served in Iraq I 20 years ago.

I have 3 kids.

I do not want them to serve due to Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Jordan.

It is time those countries fought their own battles. If they want change then let them get it themselves. I am not willing to spend my children on people that do not want what we have.

God bless them, but we have done what we could to help. Now it is there turn.

If they don’t want us there then let us drill our own oil and protect ourselves.

I have had enough!

Call me an isolationist, call me a hillbilly, call me anything you want, just don’t call me to send my kids to help them fight an Islamic religious war.

The United Nations has a military, does it not? (And also other European countries have military.)

How many times have we been told by the left that we need to let the U.N. handle international problems?

Let them handle it.

Maybe they can send a strongly worded letter.

If we do anything, we'll be met with rage and hatred by both sides.

It's a no win situation.

LBJ went from being a so called great president with the liberals with his war on poverty, which is still being lost, to one of the worse presidents ever after he deepened the Nam War.

Now would be a good time to run a poll. “do you think that Syrias WMD came from Iraq?

Really screw with Obama’s head.

I suspects Americans have been conned enough times in the last 20+ years — by Democrats and Republicans alike — that they don’t really give a damn what happens over there.

I, for one, am against any intervention. There simply is nothing to be won with way too many lives to be lost on our side, along with way too much money to be lost.

This is a Muslim problem - let them solve it.

This reminds me of the Serbian/Kosovo mess some 20 years ago. We were told it was genocide and America and Britain went in on the side of Muslim extremists. Which led to a creation of a Muslim failed basket case state in Eastern Europe and a training ground for terrorists.
