MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- A tense standoff between Russian authorities and attackers who seized at least 100 hostages -- possibly as many as 400 -- at a school in southern Russia continued Thursday with little progress reported.
Four people were killed in the initial attack.
Hundreds of armed troops have surrounded the school in the town of Beslan, near the troubled Russian republic of Chechnya where rebels and Russian forces have battled each other for a decade.

Numerous beatings and garden-variety rapes in full view of the other terrifed kids.
The whole time there the kids were prevented from drinking water (some drank pee), and were being told they were all going to die —the mean screamed that numerous times while LAUGHING THEIR HEADS OFF.
They set up bombs with huge ball-bearings in the basketball hoops, then detonated them during the assault.
The MSM held back the full horror, but there are the basic facts.
