Israel wants the US to provoke Syria into attacking them so that Israel can solve both the Syrian chemical and the Iranian nuclear threat. They know the US is an unreliable ally and they must assure their own survival.

Actually not a bad strategy, IMO, given the weakness of the United States political leadership.
