Obama has no 'intention' to strike Syria if Congress says no, says aide

Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News 35 minutes ago

Will President Barack Obama order military strikes on Syria even if Congress rejects using force? Asked that hugely consequential question on Friday, a senior White House official strongly suggested that the answer is no.

“The president, of course, has the authority to act. But it’s neither his desire, nor his intention, to use that authority absent Congress backing him,” Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken told NPR.

Blinken’s comments lent weight to a New York Times report published Friday that cited unnamed officials as saying that Obama views going to war if Congress says no as “almost unthinkable” – and even a potential trigger for impeachment proceedings against him. Blinken also played down the prospects that American military strikes on Syria would result in retaliatory attacks against America by Syria or its patron Iran or the Iran-aligned Hezbollah Islamist militia – but could not completely rule it out.

“We spend a lot of time, when we think about these things, trying to game out every possible contingency, every possible unintended consequence. And no one can give you a 100% guarantee,” he told NPR.

“We work to make sure that If anyone tries to do anything to escalate, we’re in a position to respond -- but our best assessment, including by our intelligence community, is that none of these countries have an incentive to pick a fight with the United States,” the official said.

Obama and his henchies need more time to concoct another fraud in Syria so that he be a toughie. It takes time and a lot of planning to stage these things and blame them on Assad.

You mean he changed his mind again?
Or is it he was not going to before he was going to now not going to do what he said he was going to do

What did his other Deputy National Security Advisors Winken and Nod have to say?

Now he can shift the blame to Congress.

What was that that somebody said?

I remember clearly, this is the way Hussein (the Iraq one) acted. Unpredictable in a chaotic, illogical way and in a way that had nothing to do with taking care of ANYONE.
I remember clearly because this is the way BO is behaving. Nothing and no one is sacred. No rules.

I think when push comes to shove, the House will vote for war (as will the Senate).

Let’s hope I’m wrong.

the amount people and equipment being moved into position expose that statement for the lie it is.

the equipment having been re-painted with desert camp a month ago also shows the planning started a while ago

Putin is out maneuvering Obama at every step.

If Nancy Boy had any sense at all he would have his people working at a feverish pitch to make sure congress gives him a reason to back down.

If he proceeds with missile strikes against Syria, Putin will make a total ass of him on the world stage.

LOL. More propaganda. Obama knows that he must maintain this kabuki theater until the votes are cast. He can’t declare the vote by Congress to be meaningless and say he will proceed even if Congress votes no.

I wouldn’t put it past O to strike before Congress has a chance to vote. Especially if he can find the slightest provocation. I’m sure he now feels that he screwed up by not striking last Saturday when he has the opportunity and fewer Russian forces in the area.

"....I think when push comes to shove, the House will vote for war (as will the Senate)......"

Well, the "push and shove" is coming right from no less than Mother Russia....Putin has just said that Russia will militarily back Syria.

Now what, Lord Zero...?

I think his majesty has finally come to the opinion he is wrong....national opinion is strongly against this. He has punted this over to Congress hoping for a no vote which will clear him from doing anything or taking blame for a fiasco. He will keep the forces there until an I told you so matter comes up and may then react on his own without congress whom he will paint as the villian.

Woe be it to any RINO who goes along with this ass hat’s vote for war as they need be sent packing in 14 if we survive till then.

In other words... the jug-eared moron doesn’t need congressional approval to strike, just their complicity in order to defer blame when the $hit hits the fan.

God I hope so. MOSCOW — A Russian warship carrying “special cargo” will be dispatched toward Syria

Nuclear weapons.

If Obama wants to emerge from his bunker in a year or so, to see mutated and dying people by the thousands, and millions of decaying corpses, with burnt trees frozen by a nuclear winter, and have no prospect of long-term survival, then Obama SHOULD press the button.

Here's to hoping even a clinically-insane narcissist likes living in comfort.

Anything and everything that happens subsequently will be “Congress’ fault”. Barry’s ok with that. That puts him in his comfort zone of being a carping, rock-throwing community organizer rather than having to make and carry out statesman-like policy.
