Syria says it "welcomes" Russian proposal to place chemical weapons under international control
CBS ^ | Sept 9, 2013 | CBS/AP

MOSCOW Syria on Monday quickly welcomed a call from Russia, its close ally, to place Syrian chemical arsenals under international control, then destroy them to avert a U.S. strike, but did not offer a time frame or any other specifics.

The statement by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem appeared to mark the first official acknowledgement by Damascus that it possesses chemical weapons and reflected what appeared to be an attempt by Syrian President Bashar Assad to avoid the U.S. military attack.

But it remained to be seen whether the statement represented a genuine goodwill gesture by Syria or simply an attempt to buy time.

"Syria welcomes the Russian proposal out of concern for the lives of the Syrian people, the security of our country and because it believes in the wisdom of the Russian leadership that seeks to avert American aggression against our people," al-Moallem said during a visit to Moscow, where he held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

However, al-Moallem, would not give any further details in his brief statement and didn't take any questions from reporters.

Moallem's statement came a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces by surrendering control of "every single bit" of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

In Washington, U.S. officials said they would take a "hard look" at the proposal but doubted that Syria would carry out such a plan...

“Checkmate? QUITE the contrary. This is the other shoe. It permits ODimwit to get out of this idiocy without consequence. Oh there will be some yelling in the blogsphere and among pundits, but it will be over. America won’t care and it will be forgotten.”

Obama made this about the people killed, not just about chemical weapons. He wants to go after Syria over the people that are dead, or else he would have done this months ago.

Now he either has to walk away despite his “red line” or still strike with no support.

The last thing the Democrats want is for those WMDs to be turned over for international scrutiny.

It will become obvious where they came from and that place is Saddam Era Iraq.

Saddams “missing “ WMDs will suddenly be found and “Bush Lied, People Died” crowd in Washington who were fully briefed that Saddam's WMDs went to Syria but lied that asses off anyway will be exposed for what was termed at the time “treason's kissing cousin”.

That's Assad's real end game dooms day weapon, and the one that the Democrats fear most.

Now Putin has made Obama look really bad if he doesn’t settle this peacefully. It will point out that Obama’s reason for attacking Syria wasn’t really about preventing chem weapons usage. It will also hurt Obama more with his far leftist anti war crowd.

After all, a peaceful end to this was on the table.

Fantastic idea.

That gets rid of that problem.

They can sit there in the shrink wrap. No more excuse to bomb Syria.

Well, we would still need to call of our Saudi/Qatari dogs to actually stop new world order’s manufactured revolution in Syria..

But shshhhhhh no one is supposed to know about that.

.by surrendering control of “every single bit” of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week. Kerry will say this was obama’s idea and he’ll get credit for saving the world from WWIII.

I agree. I predicted this would happen when the Russians started moving warships into the area.

Syria bought their chemical weapons from the UK. Google is your friend.

Chemical weapons have become mostly obsolete these days.

Assad can exterminate AlQaeda much more efficiently with the top notch conventional weapons that the Russians are supplying.

Putin wins again.

This isn’t good for Obama. It weakens him because it makes it look like Obama never really looked at a peaceful solution. Obama doesn’t want this because the chem weapons is not really why he is wanting to attack.

The weapons could have Saddam's signature on them and nobody would care. Certainly not the media. And certainly not people in the previous admin that refused to defend themselves.

Yes, Putin knows exactly what is going on here as he can watch all the shows on Satellite and internet.

Fighting a war by debating it on cable TV talk shows is pretty dumb.

This one lib here who hates conservatives was so upset last week because Obama is forcing him to side with Palin and Cruz.

All Obama did was have Kerry give a stuttering speech, and he threw Clinton out there for her “I want to be president” speech. Putin pulled the rug and they all fell like dominos.

Now the world surely knows what we have known all along. They are incompetent fools. I hope Clinton enjoyed her 15 minutes.

Obama couldn’t care less about the people who were supposedly killed in Syria with chemical weapons. Note that he has not said ONE WORD about the massive numbers of Christians killed by the rebels.

For Obama and company, this was always about being able to justify (to the American people and the rest of the world) military support for the rebels, the removal of Assad, and the installation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. Since Kerry said that all Assad has to do is give up his chemical weapons in one week’s time, Kerry “stupidly” gave Syria and Russia a way to diffuse the threats of full military involvement of the U.S., while still maintaining their positions. Assad will continue to fight and win against the rebels, and the Russians will continue to have influence in the country.

Obama loses.

Jim,
What’s your take? Do you remember the open mic gaffe when Obama told Putin to wait til after the election? Since then, I have wondered if our Pres is in cahoots with Putin? So this chaos he has proliferated in the mideast is part of a strategy to turn Europe over to Russia? This story points in that direction.

If Obama and Kerry aren’t jumping up and down with glee - it means they were lying to us about the real reason for wanting to bomb Syria.

No!! How can you suggest that Chris Mathews love interest would lie? (I'll bet that you do not even go to MSNBC to get the news.)

Ya see Sports Fans,
everyone suspects chemical weapons wasn’t the real reason for all this. Putin just took the justification for war off the table, AND made Syria a permanent Russian protectorate.

It’s not about how do the war hawks in DC spin this, it’s about how to they start a war, anyway?

That’s my $0.02
