CVS agrees to pay $57,000 fine for overcharging customers

CVS has agreed to pay a fine of more than $57,000 after state investigators found multiple, repeated instances of Wisconsin stores overcharging customers.

The fine is the third that CVS has received for such violations in the past five years.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced the settlement in a news release Wednesday.

The agency conducted a statewide inspection of 28 CVS locations over two days in January. Inspectors found 37 instances where stores overcharged customers. Overall, stores overcharged on 2.64% of the items that inspectors checked.

The inspectors subsequently ordered the prices corrected. But in 12 instances, the CVS stores in Madison and on N. 76th St. in Milwaukee still hadn't corrected the prices found on the first day, department spokesman Jerad Albracht said.

The Milwaukee location overcharged $1.50 for two Cetaphil lotions, 74 cents for Paper Mate pens and $1.78 for Paper Mate highlighters. The Madison location charged 10 cents too much for a $6.89 Bayer pill bottle.

Inspectors also found 15 instances where stores didn't post required signs to advise customers that they are entitled to a refund if they're not charged the lowest advertised price.

That happened at stores in Brookfield, DePere, Green Bay, Howard, Madison, Menomonee Falls, Milwaukee, Racine, Superior and Waukesha.

I didn't know that. News you can use.

Why does that state agency exist ? That should be covered by a division of the state attorney general.

Is the burden on the store to give the lowest price to each customer or for the customer to demand it? It probably costs more than 57k for you taxpayers to pay gov't busybodies to visit every CVS and go through every sales receipt.

These retailers mislead and advertise deals that are so convoluted that the average customer gets ripped off. Everytime I enter a Winn-Dixie I end up at the customer services desk afterwards to get money overcharged, back. As much as I hate govt involvement, these big retailers DO abuse the general public.

I just don't get that. The only way the retailers get away with it is because the "general public" is willing to pay the price they charge. That's called free market. The "general public" can go some place else and pay a cheaper price. Where is it written that you have to pay that price at that store? Shop at another store.

Same thing with K-mart in my area. Their till screens are set back 2 feet from the counter and always tilted so as to make keeping track of what is rung up impossible.

Then I go over the receipt and stand in customer service to get the screw ups fixed.

I have to wonder how many items were undercharged....guess they don't investigate that...in that case, it's just dumb luck that the consumers pay less....too bad for the fat company....they can afford, right..

my shallow so called Christian inlaw dickered with a sports car salesman about the price of this certain car...they verbally agreed to a price...like good people will do...when they went to sign the contract, it was a few hundred below what they talked about....of course Christian inlaw didn't hesitate to make them eat that cost.....

sometimes I don't know how people look themselves in the mirror..

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Walgreen Co., accusing the nation’s largest pharmacy chain of overcharging customers and using deceptive display advertising and pricing schemes.

Koster filed the suit in Kansas City.

Bashas’ admits to overcharging customers by mislabeling steaks
Sat Aug 31, 2013 7:40 AM

Arizona-owned Bashas’ Inc. admitted Friday to overcharging customers by mislabeling steaks and beef at some of its AJ’s Fine Foods stores.

Meat-department managers sold steaks for $10 more per pound by mislabeling the grade of “choice” tenderloin as “prime.” Employees also added trimmings from other meat products to Kobe ground beef, so customers weren’t always getting pure ground beef.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/State-fines-4-insurance-companies-for-overcharging-220504861.html

Four insurance companies are being fined a total of $100,000 after they overcharged thousands of Washington State consumers.

The companies are Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co., Hartford Casualty Insurance Co., Hartford Insurance Co. of the Midwest, and Trumbull Insurance Co. They have agreed to pay the fines, said Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler.

The companies agreed to refund more than $1 million in overcharges to consumers, including 8 percent interest. The overcharges affected nearly 4,800 auto policies between 2009 and 2013. The consumers were notified by the companies and refunds sent out in April.

The government set their danegeld price at $57,000 knowing that CVS has the alternative of paying lawyers to wear out the government clock punchers. $57,000 is obviously the price the market will bare before an expensive legal battle starts. The government doesn't charge a penny less. Once paid so easily, they are certain to come back for more.

They are not setting the prices, they are auditing the prices and checking the scanners are set to reflect the advertised price.

“”Why the hell is gubmint setting prices??”

You need to slow down, try decaf, and concentrate on your reading comprehension. The article isn’t about the gov setting prices, it is about CVS charging more than their stickered shelf price.

Thanks for the clarification and the advise.

No, I'm stickin' with the high-octane double-caffeinated jet fuel. Please see post 18, just above. I have simply gotten suspicious of everything done by our gubmint, at all levels. Sometimes it just feels good to pull the .45 and shoot from the hip, figuratively speaking, of course.
