Early Cracks in Nunn’s Armor
Townhall.com ^ | September 14, 2013 | Brandon Howell

The Democrats’ one best hope at a competitive Senate race in Georgia is already exhibiting signs of weakness.

Since her July announcement, Michelle Nunn’s nascent campaign has sought branding grounded in entrenched Georgia political roots, thanks to her famous father, while ensuring daylight between party and president.

The Points of Light CEO made no mention of party affiliation in a campaign announcement email, and a two-week tour across the state, dubbed “What Washington Can Learn From Georgia,” appeared more akin to her career in nonprofits than a show of political force.

Yet an increasing slew of unforced errors is undermining such efforts.

Juxtaposed against the self-projected, bipartisan problem solver image were Facebook ads calling on targeted users to “Help Keep the Democratic Majority,” hardly a winner in a state shaded as deeply red as Georgia.

The early rollout was followed by POLITICO reports that Organizing for Action, President Obama’s campaign arm gone non-profit, had been pitching donations on the premise it’d be helping Nunn’s bid.

Political realities of outside groups aside, casting a winning image as a Georgia Democrat is complicated by www.BarackObama.com filling coffers off plans to go to bat for your campaign.

President Obama’s Peach State approval numbers stood at 43 percent when last tallied, compared to 54 percent who disapprove.

The larger error comes in the form of responding to support from pro-abortion group EMILY’s List.

Nunn’s camp maintained near-universal radio silence, apparently eager to sweep the story under the rug in a state that approved a 20-week abortion ban long before Wendy Davis became a hero of the Left.

Save more Facebook ads touting the endorsement and calling on users to help the first-time candidate “keep fighting for the issues that matter to women and families,” casting a digital trail far from electable in a state that’s not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1996.

“What Washington Can Learn From Georgia” appears further turned on its head given that Nunn is now joint fundraising with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, eight months out from the primary and facing three announced competitors.

She’s also gone wheels up for DC to fill campaign coffers with Howard Dean.

Still, Nunn’s greatest early fumble lies with positing herself in favor of military intervention in Syria.

Tinging a statement with rhetoric akin to that of her pro-military muscle father is well and good, Sam Nunn remains a political lion in the annals of Georgia history, until taken into account that an overwhelming majority of Georgians expressed disapproval of any such action.

Some 54 percent of respondents opposed intervening in a recent survey, compared to just 34 percent backing President Obama’s plan.

The group most opposed? Elderly voters, those most likely to turn out on Election Day in a midterm cycle, calling Nunn’s political calculus into further question.

Absent the show of support was any hint of President Obama, a void filled by Georgia’s current GOP Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, both of whom were cited as favoring a strike.

Adding insult to injury, the latter went on to cast himself against authorizing the military option.

Supporters will call the early misfires growing pains, citing a long electoral calendar and the rigors accompanying first-time candidacy.

Yet for Michelle Nunn, any hint of victory consists of walking a perfect tightrope whilst hoping for lightning in a bottle. So far, she’s not keeping her end of the deal.

It appears Georgia freepers no longer admire "conservative" (except for being pro-abortion, pro-illegal alien, gun grabbing, etc., etc., etc.) Democrat Sam Nunn.

Fortunately, I don't need to "lose a lot of respect" for liberal RAT politicians like Mike Madigan and Paul Simon when their daughters run for office, since I never respected them to begin with.

Sam Nunn was actually fairly conservative for a Democrat - - he was an “old-fashioned” Democrat - - who pushed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as an answer to Clinton and his fellow rats’ mumblings about flinging open the military’s doors to faggots back in the early ‘90s. So, I wonder where Michelle stands on the various faggot issues such as gay “marriage” and the sodomization of the once-proud US military?

He wasn’t “fairly conservative for a democrat”. He’s a liar who pretended to be to get morons to vote for him.

He was “old fashioned” in the sense that democrats have been doing that for over 100 years.

Darn. I was hoping Georgia freepers finally figured out this guy was never conservative to begin with, especially with his far-left socialist daughter getting help from the likes of Howard Dean. It's little surprise Georgia is more RAT friendly than its neighboring states. I've heard conservative freepers praise Zig Zag, Nunn, Barnes, Maddox, Talmadge, etc., etc. Some seem to actually prefer RATs who vote conservative 20% of the time than "RINOs" who vote conservative 80% of the time.

Post #13 gave the best explanation of why the media convinced everyone we should "respect" Nunn: "For some ungodly reason, Nunn was touted as national defense expert and foreign policy wonk wrt Russia. From what I saw back then, he was just living on a trumped up reputation, like Barack Hussein is now. I think he survived and thrived then because he survived the Herman Talmadge "Bountiful Overcoat" scandals".

Reminds me somewhat of Mark Kirk. Another backstabbing liberal traitor that inexplicably has conservative supporters, because the mainstream continually touts Kirk as some kind of heroic patriotic military man who protects our nation and is wise sage on foreign policy (nevermind that Kirk has voted the wrong way on every major foreign policy issue of the last decade... yeah, Mark, the surge in Iraq will never work... we must withdraw now.. blah blah blah)

Could be worse, I suppose. You still have freepers that admire LIEberman after all these years. Now that's the ultimate stupid thing for conservatives to do.

He wasn’t “fairly conservative for a democrat”.

Actually, yes he was. For example, in 1994 he had an ACU rating higher than any Democrat senator except for Robert Byrd, and higher than a couple of "Republican" senators (Hatfield and Chafee). So yeah, that made him conservative... for a Democrat. And yeah, he was a strong force in passing DADT. I don't know how old you are, but I hope you're okay with facts and stuff.

The point of my post was that his daughter needs to be asked questions about her stand on faggot issues, not to "praise" her scumbag father. Please don't jump to conclusions and then act like a troll. I've seen you post better.

I think Nunn's moderate voting record was a ruse to get votes but I see what you're saying. He wasn't a frothing moonbat like most rats just a garden variety DC swine like Byrd, Hatfield and Chafee.

My bad Lancey, I guess I jumped in without looking. I tend to be hyper-vigilant when it comes to certain things like the breed of freeper given to have a false sense of history when it comes to Southern democrats.

G’night.

That RAT-friendly moniker you give us is because Georgia has a large metropolitan black population that pretty much controls all the large urban areas. Transplants from all over the south and a lot from up north.

On a State level, statewide elected officials are all Republican now IIRC. Sure, we suffered under Democrat Governors for over 100 years straight, right up until 2000 when we broke those chains.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_of_Georgia

We finally realized that the old line Democrats who could still manage a state transitioned into the likes of Jimmy Carter and Roy Barnes (a slimy effing weasel if there ever was one).

Even looking back on Zell Miller and while I disliked him immensely at the time, he ran the state well and he wasn't an ideologue out to fulfill the national DNC mantra like so many other governors are now. He may be an old style Democrat, but he is an honorable and honest man.

In retrospect though, yep, Georgia may have been RAT-friendly, but we came to our senses. Large majority R representation in the HOUSE and both SENATORS are R (even if they are backstabbing RINOS which we are going to fix 2016 with Isakson and in 2014 with Chambliss' replacementsd). At least it's more than you can say for some of our other states to the north.

Also the immigration issue will be a big deal. The statehouse has passed good immigration measures.

John Barrow (D) is the right of most Senate Republicans on the issue. He even tweeted support of Jeff Sessions.

Broun connects it instantly to creating millions of democrats who dont care about the constitution.
