Because these are only income opportunities for the Pakistani military, rather than actual use as weapons. Their maintenance budgets will be diverted to private foreign bank accounts of Pakistani officers. Those small enough to be sold outright will be sold, and the rest will slowly turn into junk.

We needed Pakistan to supply our troops in Afghanistan. Non weapons could be shipped through Russia and the north but weapons had to come through Pakistan. It was a case of getting into bed with the devil but we had little choice.

Under GWB we only kept about 30,000 men in Afghanistan, enough to keep the cities from falling. Obama pushed it up to 100,000 because Afghanistan was the “good war” unlike Iraq. This put a much greater strain on our supply lines. After OBL was killed Pakistan shut down the supply lines for many months until the requisite bribes were forked over, namely the weapons talked about in this article. Pakistan is trying to squeeze the last bit on juice out of us as we are leaving. I posted an article a few days ago about how much equipment is being flown out of Afghanistan because Pakistan is turning the screws on us.

Their economy can't support all the military hardware without large infusions of cash from us. It reminds me of an article not long ago about South Africa buying brand new fighters from Europe that are rotting in the hangers because they can’t maintain them. Things might get really hot after 2014 when our money slows to a trickle and the Pak military, which runs the economy, has to decide whether to use their shiny toys or let them rust away.

I was happy to see under Bush an effort to engage India as a full ally but that seems to be sputtering to a stop.

This is because India doesn't do alliances. It wants all the benefits of an alliance without the obligations. India has been one of the most flagrant violators of sanctions against Iran, and gave us the middle finger on Iraq.

I can imagine that is the case. So many highly skilled people over the years found good jobs in the defense industry.

Is India supposed to be our Ally? If the answer is yes, then you have your answer. We never aid those that are friendly with us. Only those who oppose us.
