Seventy-four percent of Americans think teachers make less than they really do, according to a new poll from Rasmussen. The average teacher salary in America is $55,000 (upward of $75,000 in Chicago), but three quarters of Americans think teachers earn less than that.

Over half of Americans (52 percent) believe teachers are paid too little. Just 15 percent believe they are paid too much while 26 percent think teachers are paid the right amount.

In a related poll, just 26 percent of Americans give public schools positive marks.

Too much in my opinion. Education degrees are ridiculous tripe - that includes the masters degrees.

Teachers, cry me a river.

Where was I crying.

Like I said, I have relatives who are teachers, you ain't going to BS me.

I am not trying to BS you. I actually have 2 Bachelors degrees and 2 Masters. I was offering you the opportunity to walk a mile in my shoes. If you don't want to that is fine.

I was lucky to have some great teachers. In many cases they were the same ones who had taught my parents. They were local people and were invested in the education of kids they knew would grow up to be their neighbors.

One of my former teachers is long since retired and tutors my niece in math. He was at our family reunion summer because his wife and only daughter are both deceased and we invite him to family events.

You don’t have a checkmate. You blabbed just as much drivel. Please. Sure, you have to have a college degree to become a teacher. Big deal. Most of them don’t have more than a 2.5 gpa

Every other person going through college and working in private sector have to perform lightyears better than a teacher or they get fired from their jobs.

Most teachers get 12 weeks off for the summer. Some administrators have to come back ‘early.’ Big deal they have to take some college courses during their time off. They get paid plenty for what they accomplish.

Just because you don’t think YOU are intellectually challenged, doesn’t mean you’re not.

Plenty of regular "teachers" are over paid........

Period.

And I'd gather plenty of teacher's are underpaid.

“I spent 3 weeks as Assistant Principal for summer school and then 2 weeks taking a class”

I am sure this was not in your salary and you were paid extra.

In Texas Principle in Middle School makes around $ 105K for example here is 3 without much looking.

Polytechnic HS Principal Hs $104,860
Southwest HS Principal Hs $104,860
Diamond HS Principal Hs $104,860

My information is from this website. When this was released in the local paper the Texas Public Employees went nuts and tried to remove it.

Credit the poor-mouthing teachers’ unions for that.

We need more people in the classrooms who have actual skills. Neil Armstrong went into teaching after leaving NASA and I’m guessing he was a top notch teacher.

Hillsdale college has wisely dropped stand alone teaching related degrees. They now require a 4 year degree in something real first. The thinking is that we have too many teachers teaching things that they don’t really know themselves.

Are there any teaching nuns left? Anywhere?

Yes, there are. In fact I will be seeing a few of them when I head back to Brooklyn, NY in less than 2 weeks for my 35th HS class reunion.

Don't want to walk a mile in your flip flops, I was busy working oilfield for 30 years.

I actually have 2 Bachelors degrees and 2 Masters.

Dang!!
You're one well educated person!
Can't hold a candle to you.

So Verga you believe homeschoolers and protestants are they same as liberals? Are you intimidated by homeschool parents?

This country runs on trucks. I’d say there is a huge responsibility inherent in the job. Drivers are entrusted with 33K plus pound, for class 8, vehicles traveling down the highway, and in our cities. Everything you don’t make from scratch in your life spent some time on a truck. A teacher doesn’t pay attention in class for 15 seconds, maybe some spitballs get thrown. A driver doesn’t pay attention for 15 seconds, people get hurt. A driver has to make his route/delivery/appointment in the middle of winter, he won’t get an off-day. There is much more responsibility for a truck driver than you give them credit for.

You do realize how your statement looks, of only 10 weeks, or more likely 8 or 9 weeks of vacation? There are those of us who do the continuing education thing, certifications,, or more often than not work on advanced degrees while working 50 plus hours per week. This while having only 2-3 weeks of vacation?

I see nothing in your post that dismisses the fact teachers are not the poorly paid victims we are told they are.

I point to truck drivers as an example of people who are underpaid.

Unlike teachers, truck drivers are paid what their labor is worth in the marketplace.

Agreed. Some "teachers" shouldn't be paid, or teaching! Rename them Liberal Indoctrinators and you'd be closer to the truth.

You’re an idiot.

Absolute proof of one's intelligence and ability to have or support a factual true argument. I rest my case.

Next do you expect us to believe truck drivers have as much responsibility as teachers.

Define responsibility.

Truck drivers have hundreds, thousands, millions of lives that they could snuff out in an instant. Year after year, after year. You don't think those responsibilities are worthy? Are you capable of that?

What's the track record of "teachers" screwing up kids? Pretty high..from what I read. But not killing them...so much.

Maybe you don't think the 18 yr old kid without a "degree" in the military doesn't have as much "responsibility" as you either. He/she is just trying to keep our butt's safe.

Of course "teachers" know everything...about everything. While enjoying their 8-10 weeks off a year...as you pointed out. Maybe doing some CEU crap along the way....

Okay let me just come clean....I think most teachers are a joke....Of course I think most any professionals in any profession are generally a joke. : ) I'm in the medical biz....I know Doc's who are jokes. Nurses who are jokes. Therapists who are jokes.

So...I guess my point is...you can crow about teachers...and get your jolly's bagging on truck drivers, but that doesn't mean your "better" than them!!! PERIOD.
