CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — An unarmed man seeking help after a car crash over the weekend was shot 10 times by the Charlotte police officer who's now charged in his death, investigators said Monday. A police news release said Officer Randall Kerrick fired 12 times at 24-year-old Jonathan A. Ferrell early Saturday while responding to a breaking and entering call. Ten of the bullets hit the former Florida A&M University football player. Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter and is scheduled for a first court appearance on Tuesday.

Police determined the shooting was excessive and charged Kerrick on Saturday. A police statement Saturday said the investigation showed "Kerrick did not have a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter."

Charlotte's police chief is a black guy. I'm not surprised that he's going after Kerrick, especially given the monolithic black response to the Trayvon Martin incident. There's probably some concern about black riots, given Charlotte's 1/3 black population.

I suspect that since he was thrown under the bus by his own department, there maybe something else going on that has not yet been released.

Black police chief. It's up to his union to get a good lawyer for him. I suspect it will end up much more cut and dried than anyone expects. At 2:30 in the morning, visibility is a serious issue, not just in terms of what the guy is or isn't wielding, and whether he's got any accomplices. And then there's the fact that the deceased was a big guy.

See, ...this is why nobody needs a ten round “clip”.

Hey Sten, That requires much more training and physical exertion than we want to put out nowadays!

Besides, after Rodney took a lickin and got his mug on tape, most cop shops thought they should retire the venerable night stick.

Now its all tasers, phazers, pepper spray, and all the silly frilly things that really don’t work when you need them to.

A guy trained with a good stick, who knows where the “funny bone” meets the brain, can do wonders.

And the good news is, no one gets killed.

A good smart smack on the back of the elbow does the trick every time its tried. Watch the biggest guy in the world take a knee. Even a cranked up meth head gets that signal to the brain, loud and clear.

the victim is black. The cop is white. The chief is black.

Sure is a lot of knee jerk reactions here. It sounds like it may or may not be justified. How about waiting for the facts?

Did you forget where you are ? This is free republic !

Free to judge, cast aspersions, call names, pass sentence, etc.

Facts you say ? Who needs facts ? Silly Hugin.....

How about waiting for the facts?

I'll wait for the facts as soon as somebody can tell me why government vehicles apparently don't come equipped with seat belts, turn signals, speedometers or cruise control and why the drivers are exempt from cell phone usage bans, hogging the passing lane laws, DWI or "Click It Or Ticket" checkpoints or obstructing traffic laws.

If there were a word stronger than "hate", a lot of people would apply it to cops these days.

This is sad but this cop did not use good judgment. An innocent man is dead and all he wanted was some help from those who are supposedly out there to help us.

My ex-wife and I took a wrong turn in Charlotte at the very time the first verdict in the Rodney King trial was announced. The L.A. PD officers were found not guilty. I had let down my window to ask a black woman for directions when she tried to stab me with a kitchen knife. Didn’t know what was going on; there was a crowd gathering attempting to block our escape. I floored our ‘85 Cougar with the big V-8 nearly running down a couple of the dependent class chumps.

Having said that, I won’t rush to the same sort of judgements they made. There very well may be much more to this story than we know, or maybe not. Time will tell.

How many rounds are typically in a cop gun? Did the guy have a banana clip on a pistol?

Sten,

Actually, yes they did ban the nightstick in somejurisdictions ;and took away the big long heavy flashlights as well. There were several lawsuits brought as a result of people dying when the PR24 was used in a chokehold. Many officers were glad to see it go since it was akin to a sword in that one had always to position it out of the way before sitting and was awkward entering/exiting the car.

So the officer is left with choice of poorly trained barehanded combat, taser, or gun.

The less confident the officer the more likely to just shoot. And police usually fire many more shots than the typical citizen in a self-defense incident. In my patrol days the service revolver held SIX .357 rounds and I seem to remember most shootings left the officer’s gun with 2 or 3 rounds unfired and the perp down. Now the officer often has two to three times as many rounds ,which MAY be needed for confrontations with armed groups. But it is still questionable tactics to expend all your ammo unless necessary.

The dead man can not tell his side ;we have no knowledge if he suffered brain trauma in the accident.10 hits indicates a panicky or vicious shooter.I doubt a panic-striken person could make 10 hits of 12 shots fired.

There have been diabetics and others violent and disoriented through no fault of their own ,who have been denied proper treatment or even killed because the responding officer never considered medical causes.

Officers being human WILL make mistakes;when those mistakes cause great harm they must answer to society and the victims of the mistakes(or SHOULD). And if the mistake is shown to be a deliberate ,willful act then the officer should be punished as severely as any citizen.

Ten hits? How many of them were after he was down?

Yesterdays thread on this:
Charlotte police kill unarmed man who may have been running to them for help.

That kind of "Protection and Service" I do not need!

Yes. Those are old school now, and even the ASP expandable baton is coming off the belt. The taser was deployed and did not effect the decedant or missed. The next level of force is deadly.

It’s tragic that this guy got killed but I remind everyone that if you were on trial you would want a complete investigation, full discovery and for the case to be viewed in the totality of the circumstances.

Something that the media is not going to provide.

ok.. i see. they’ve removed a useful weapon and left the officers ill equipped.

could that be the intention with the expectation of more citizens being shot by cops which could escalate to cries for more gun control? (tho it’d make union cops look bad, so i doubt the anti-gun/pro-big-govt types want that)

meanwhile, if a perp is running at you with no visible weapon and he must be stopped... and you have time for 10 shots... legs? knees? incapacitate instead of kill, no?

meanwhile, wth... 10 shots and still twitching?? good shooting with 83% on target tho placement and quantity needed due to poor placement is in question

The PR24 was a pain in the ass to haul around, required more training to become and stay proficient with. The ASP you could carry on you belt collapsed and the strikes and deployment are much more large muscle group friendly. BTW, joint strikes are considered “red zone” strikes, last resort with that particular level of force.

Rodney King spelled the death of PR24s.

Police officers are not taught to shoot at limbs, only center mass or failure drills. A big healthy football player hopped up on at the very least adrenaline, might have taken all those rounds and continued to stand. Standing is still resisting. Further, officers aren’t trained to kill, they are trained to shoot in areas that will bring the quickest incapacitation. If they were shooting to kill, then a 7.62 rifle would be the standard issue for each officer. Pistol rounds are a poor substitute and only ten percent of all victims of pistol caliber wounds die as a result of their injuries.

There are plenty of bad cops, but a single car wreck in middle of night is odd. I suspect he was high on drugs.

Why didn’t he call 911 on his own phone? High on drug and avoiding cops?

Then, 3 cops were responding to a reported breaking and entering in the middle of the night and they come upon a very large black guy charging them. I think I would shoot too.

There were 3 cops. If the one was out to kill a black dude, he probably wouldn’t have done it in front of witnesses.
