“Knock Somebody up in the morning” - I get that. Knocking to wake them up.

“Taking the mick”... I’d think that meant “fighting with an Irishman”...

“What have you been up to?” British Bobbies asking that question... I can see that.

“The LOO?” What in hell....?!?!? Haha!!

Yeah... the "loo"... no idea brother. :-) I'm not even sure they know. It's probably either due to some French or Flemish root word.

Oh... another word they used to laugh at us for was "trash can". They'd laugh pretty good over that! It's not a "trash can"... it's a "dust bin" :-)

With 11 of the victims being white it appears to me that this was a black on white hate crime.

Maybe we can get some UK folks out here to chime in on where the term “the Loo” came from...

Anyone UK people on the board, please jump in here....

It’s my understanding that it came from the era when lodging facilities had one “bathroom” for the entire facility, not one per room as is normally the current practice.

That room was always “Room 100”.

The “100” then took a short trip to become “loo”.

It makes sense...maybe it was some cockney who couldn’t read all that well, saw it, and pronounced it “loo” instead of “one hundred” - it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

And people heard it, thought it funny, and started using it as well, and it just propagated into the everyday vernacular as slang.

I can see that.

Sort of like we call it the “crapper” (Thomas Crapper, inventor of the flush toilet), the “pot” (chamber pot?), the “sh*tter” (for obvious reasons)...
