Skip to comments.Gov. Rick Scott considering executive action to address Common Core controversy
Posted on 09/18/2013 5:12:45 PM PDT by Kaosinla
Once a clear Common Core supporter, Scott is in a political bind. Tea party groups, which make up an important part of his base, want Florida to jettison the new standards and tests. But schools across the state are already teaching Common Core, and Republican leaders in the House and Senate are standing behind the benchmarks.
The Common Core standards outline what is expected of students at each grade level but do not include suggestions for books or how teachers should plan their lessons. The benchmarks, created by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers, have been approved in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
Scott was not clear on a timeline for executive action. Well do it as quickly as we can coalesce what we think is the right thing to do and still get information from people, he said.

Why would anyone delay when the facts are clear and growing each day.
Today it is the teaching of the second and third amendments as one, with a changed meaning!
A few days ago it was Russia as a great space program for pages and pages and a few lines about the US.
My grandson came home and said, “ We learned about Lincoln today”. He was a bad man and put people in jail without a trial!”
Will this never end?
From other stuff I have seen, this is false.
From where do governors and even mayors get “Executive Order” powers?
Is there a good/bad list regarding Common Core?
Common Core will usurp local control of curriculum
I agree with you 100% ...EXCEPT....
I am sick of otherwise bright conservatives - even ones as brilliant as Mark Levin - lionizing Lincoln, who WAS a monster and our first statist.
Morrill tariffs, suspending habeas corpus, making the states appendages of the federal government rather than sovereign units. He was a bad, bad guy who really started the slide to statism.
“My grandson came home and said, We learned about Lincoln today. He was a bad man and put people in jail without a trial!
Will this never end?”
Actually, he did.
he actually did put people into Prison for speaking out against him and the war.
I hope you tell your grandson that he did put people into prison with no trail.
He was not as great as he’s made out and that teacher got it right.
I’d be more worried about what he is told about how muslims are compared to Christians etc.
LOL correct and the teacher actually surprised me and got that right.
I’m sick of even our side making out that he was a great one for freedom, he put people tino prison with no trail, never had any intention of freeing anyone and even during his proclamation he still said they were free in places he had no control over while he had written that they should not be free in places he did have control over.
I guess I did not make myself clear.
Yes, we told him it was true. We discussed the war and that is tough with family from Alabama and NY at the table! LOL
My point was they discussed nothing good. It was just more attempts to continue breaking down the past of the country and continued attacks against the founders. We have been hearing it from all directions and never with any attempt to discuss how very exceptional the country is...
‘he actually did put people into Prison for speaking out against him and the war.’
In the year 2013 it is easy for us all to look back and take offense at the actions that Lincoln took during the Civil War.
Imagine it’s the year 1860...(hey mom, I went to the store to get a cover for my ipad and the clerk asked me, ‘What’s an ipad?’)
Battles being fought in Virginia could be heard at the White House. There was no, ‘Red’ phone for Lincoln to pick up and get an up to date report on the war.
Suffice it to say, there were reasons why Lincoln took the actions that he did so long ago. Reasons that make no sense to current day modern Americans.
Lincoln was right about one thing though. If the South had
successfully seceded from the union, then there would be no Northern or Southern America today. Once split, England, France, Spain, etal would have chipped away at the two, ‘countries’ until there would be no soverign America today. This is what Lincoln’s vision and strength has given to present day Americans.
Did Lincoln make mistakes? Sure. Let’s be clear on this though, thank God that Lincoln was president.
The Common Core standards outline what is expected of students at each grade level but do not include suggestions for books or how teachers should plan their lessons.
The camels nose is under the tent but there are no plans for it to sleep inside.
hope their was no food on that table EEK
I’ll be surprised if the USA is what it is today in about a 100 years.
Think it was a Russian years back which said the same thing.
Many muslims in the class...I bet it is not discussed in any way except their contribution to humanity as Obama spoke about.
I was at an assembly and NO pledge was said. The Principal just walked to the microphone and started the program.
The Marching Band does play the Star Spangled Banner before the football games.
I thought liberals LOVED diversity, so why do they want monolithic standards of education instead of letting each state and locality decide it’s curriculum?
Because Common Core is a liberal PC brainwashing Standard and you need monolithic organizations to enforce a standard propaganda set.
Yes, The Great Emancipator once declared--quite candidly--that he would do whatever might be necessary to preserve the union, whether that meant freeing all of the slaves, freeing none of the slaves, or freeing some of the slaves, while leaving others in bondage.
That hardly sounds like a principled position.
Moreover, Lincoln was far from color-blind: He even asserted that "[t]here is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality."
And these (rather toxic) views were not merely the views of Lincoln during the 1850s--at the time of the heralded Lincoln-Douglas debates--but during the 1860s also...
Uh, Rick...the Federal Government has no damn business setting education standards for the state. None.

Vampires, McKinsey & Co., and the Future of Public Education: Its All Connected.
In their promotional flyer Transforming Learning through mEducationMcKinsey and Co. promote the values of hand held and mobile devices so that they can now have direct access to children as the consumers of their learning products with no messy overhead or interference from a teacher, peers, or a community of learners. They state the market for mEducation products and services today is worth 3.4 billion dollars. They add that, By 2020, mEducation may address up to 70 billion of the anticipated 8 trillion dollars spent globally.
Let me rephrase that for you: McKinsey will serve as or supervise the GOVERNING ENTITY to deliver state-wide testing/data collection to (from) public school children. And Gates and Hewlett Foundations foot the bill to make this happen.

“Terrorist Professor Bill Ayers and Obamas Federal School Curriculum”
“...Common Core is part of an effort to implement regionalism, the replacement of local governments by regional boards of federally appointed bureaucrats, who in turn are beholden to international bodies. Regionalism will eliminate the freedom parents now have in choosing neighborhoods with good schools because tax funds will be distributed equally. There will be no escape in home schooling or private schools either, because the curriculum will follow national tests. Students will be tracked through mandatory state records that will then be accessible to Washington bureaucrats. Ultimately, all students will be subject to education mandates implemented by Obamas radical cronies...”
Key word - REGIONALISM - Agenda 21

where are you, what county as I;m in St Johns, St Augustine and it’s the pledge, God etc said here , we also have the best school system in the state and the county is not in debt , infact we’re building 5 more schools while other counties are closing.
Course we’re also one of the most republican counties in the state and have no Dems in charge here which would explain why we have money and no debt.
exactly and when I tell people some of his quotes I get the usual of ,”I’ve never heard of that before”.
He was far from being the great man some like to make out, he was certainly a good political official as he knew how to blame others, do the opposite of what he said and switch positions to suit himself.
Find out what the teacher really taught, because you know how kids can misconstrue what is being taught.
Common Core is bad. But then it was partially written by Bill Ayers.
Lincoln was a great man and president. He is one of the greatest presidents we’ve had.
Every person/president has issues, but should be looked at for the whole rather than a few things. Also, the circumstances, and reason must be taken into account.
The teacher may have got it right, but I’ll bet there was no background. The poor kid’s perception of Lincoln is now colored.
The Muslim/Christian is something to be worried about. But it is “another” thing, not the only thing.
Thank you for supporting Lincoln and the truth! It’s sad that there are those here who have fallen for the degrading Lincoln strategy by the Left. Context is everything.
God blessed us indeed, by giving us Lincoln!
A little aside: the cousin of my friend’s great, great grandfather was the official Piper for the White House and Licoln. He accompanied Lincoln’s body.
It depends on how you view the man.
The kid will be alright.]
Agree that it is one of the things not the only thing.
I think we got the facts straight. This is a high school junior and an American History course.
