Senate sees way forward on funding bill [Amendment to Strike]
The Hill ^ | September 19, 2013 | Alexander Bolton

......... Reid’s first move would be to schedule a vote to end debate on proceeding to the House continuing resolution. This would require 60 votes. Republican senators would vote to proceed to the bill because it would including the language to defund ObamaCare.

Then he would fill the amendment tree, defining what amendments could be considered in relation to the House legislation.

Reid would be sure that one of the pending amendments is a so-called “amendment to strike,” which would allow him schedule a future vote on stripping the language defunding ObamaCare and prioritizing debt payments.

A Senate Democratic aide characterized the amendment to strike as a substitute amendment that would allow Reid to replace the House language with a “clean” proposal to fund the government beyond September.

“It would be a substitute amendment,” the aide said. “There’s just a bunch of stuff we’d want to get rid of.”

Then Reid would schedule a vote to end debate on the House continuing resolution and proceed to final passage. This vote also requires 60 votes.

Republicans are expected to support this cloture vote because the legislation would still include language to defund ObamaCare.

“It doesn’t seem to make much sense to vote 'no' on a bill that contains the defund-ObamaCare provision,” said Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (Texas). “I don’t know anybody in our conference who’s for ObamaCare, so I think they’d vote 'yes' to get on a bill to defund it.”

After this second cloture vote has passed, the pending amendments can be approved with a simple majority vote. At this point, Reid could strike the language defunding ObamaCare and prioritizing debt payments without having to rely on Republican votes. He could strike the language with Democratic votes alone...........

Then this:

Cruz open to filibuster to defund Obamacare "......Cruz loudly praised Boehner on Thursday for "historic leadership" and House Republicans for "sticking their neck out."

But earlier in the day, he told reporters that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has enough votes to send a CR with ObamaCare funding straight back to the House.

"Reid has 54 Democrats, and they presumably are going to stand with him … and a number of Senate Republicans have expressed that they may support the Democrats here," Cruz said after an event held by the National Auto Dealers Association.

"I think it is likely that it will take another election for a full repeal," he added.

Cruz and his allies have not yet outlined their plan for when the House passes its CR on Friday. Several have said that it depends how Reid responds.

But Cruz's comments on Thursday suggest that all tactics are on the table, including a talking filibuster that could make Republicans the face of a shutdown on Oct. 1........"

And this:

There Is No Compromise on ObamaCare

"......Let's assume for a moment that Krauthammer is right -- that defunding ObamaCare is simply impossible, and it will never work. Does that mean there is no value in taking up the fight? Sometimes, fighting a losing battle based on principle and in selfless dedication to what is right -- and being seen doing it, à la Ted Cruz -- can be rousing for a political cause. [emphasis added]

And if Krauthammer is also right in his hopeful prediction that ObamaCare will be crushed by its own immense size and economically destructive makeup, what harm is there, then, in being among the voices that have been heralding that horrible outcome while fighting to protect Americans from it? Wouldn't Republicans then have more credibility with the American people for having done so?

I think they would. But the real reason ObamaCare must be fought at every turn is that Krauthammer is probably wrong. Not about it being an unwinnable battle -- it may very well be. But if history is any measure, he's probably wrongfully optimistic about ObamaCare's potential to be reversed after its continued implementation.

Why? Barack Obama explains (emphasis added):........"

[SNIP]

"....In the event that our country continues to exist under these conditions, it will be anything but the America we know today. Considering what's at stake, it is only logical that conservatives ask their representatives to employ any and all legal measures to thwart ObamaCare -- spirit of "compromise" be damned."

Ultimately if the house decides it will not fund boehnercare under any circumstances, then they could shut down the federal government indefinitely. Then it’s just a question of who blinks first.

Everyone must keep emailing their Senators and Representatives.

DON’T STOP telling them to fight this - to be brave and do the right thing!

Bravery is contagious.

Be the face of what is right.

It is up to the voters to let their elected official know (multiple times) that they DON’T WANT Obamacare - and if their Senators and Reps don’t fight this (regardless of what said elected official believes is going to happen to THEM in the media if they stand and fight against it) that they will answer to the voters who have their finger on the button - those “crawl across broken glass” voters who KNOW the difference between self-serving politicians and those doing what they were sent there to do.

I agree.

I think we should make the phone calls. It won’t hurt and it just takes a few minutes to dial them up. We should at least give them the opportunity to do the right thing. If they fail, then at least we’ve done OUR job.

And be sure to mention that we're on to this legislation massaging and manipulation and that "their" vote is OUR vote and we will not fall for the ususal "we had to" blah, blah, BS.

Tell them it's time for them to smarten up, we have.

WSJ: Washington Sees Incomes Soar as Most of U.S. Declines "American incomes have tumbled over the last decade. But for many people in Washington, D.C., it’s been something of a party.

The income of the typical D.C. household rose 23.3% between 2000 and 2012 to an inflation-adjusted $66,583, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, its most comprehensive snapshot of America’s demographic, social and economic trends. During this period, median household incomes for the nation as a whole dropped 6.6% — from $55,030 to $51,371. The state of Mississippi, which had one of the biggest declines, dropped 15% to $37,095: Nearly one in three people there have an income that is near the poverty line.

The Washington, D.C. metro area — which includes the surrounding suburbs in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia — has it even better, with a median household income of $88,233 that ranks highest among the U.S.’s 25 most populous metro areas. Tampa, Florida’s median income, by contrast, is under $45,000............................."

“Everyone must keep emailing their Senators and Representatives.”

Thank you for the reminder. I just emailed Senator Nelson D,FL and Senator Rubio, R(Sort-of), FL. The note to Nelson was especially difficult. I don’t think it will do any good unless they’re wavering. Here’s my note to Nelson.

Dear Senator Nelson,

I understand you’re a Democrat and that you voted for Obamacare. All of us make mistakes. Now that we clearly understand how damaging this “we-must-pass-the-bill-to-see-what-is-in-it” legislation is, I urge you to reconsider and vote to defund it. The damage caused by this legislation is real and ongoing. It will force Americans to work fewer hours and to continue working well into our old age. Please vote to defund this damaging legislation now.

Kind regards,

We need to contact Rush and Shawn and all media outlets and ask them to get out information on Reid’s plan to use the “Amendment Strike” to “clean up” the House CR.

Let them know we aren’t ignorant. Let them know we lived through the Corn Husker Kickback, and all those lies as Reid and Pelosi shoved this down our throats.

Tell them to get in front of this deception. We do “GET IT” if it is BROADCAST to us, so we are informed.

Instruct them to get their ARTICULATE members out there to put this before the public - We the People - who are going to suffer if this isn’t de-funded and repealed.

That is unless THEY don’t want us to understand how it works up there.........

Which is exactly what Cruz is trying to do...force the GOP fossils in the Senate out into the open and publicly take a strand either for or against Obamacare. That's why they hate him so much.

But read the entire article. Reid can go back after this is all nicely passed and then CHANGE it (and pass with a simple majority) because he will have the “Amendment to Strike” attached that will allow him to “clean up” the House language and kick out a clean CR.

This information NEEDS to be UNDERSTOOD.

It allows the Senators to say that they voted for defunding Obamacare and then they’ll just throw up their hands and say, Reid changed it and we couldn’t do anything about it.

By NOT KNOWING that this is their “out” we don’t have a chance to tell them we KNOW what is going on and that we want THEM to get out there - on the news shows and in print - and TELL everyone that this is what Reid is going to do. It is their obligation and duty to inform their constituents.

And if they don’t they are part and parcel of this maneuver.
