I don’t think it incites violence but it does de-sensitizes us the same way Hollywood does. No different that “action packed” movies. Some of the shooters in the past massacres had an obsession with video games as I recall. I don’t blame the game, I blame the person but the game can be a “trigger” for violence prone people.
Untold millions and millions of people, all over the world, play violent video games like the GTA franchise, among numerous others. Of these, maybe a handful commit a seriously violent crime. If they’re anything like the DC Navy Yard shooter (who liked these games, we’re told), they were already bat s—t crazy to begin with. Tough to see causation in this case.
Probably explains why I see a Jihadi hidden in a pair of ballet slippers.

If visual entertainment doesn’t influence behavior why do companies advertise on TV?
Did watching western movies and tv shows in the 50s along with Dragnet, Highway Patrol, comic books, Rat Patrol, Alfred Hitchcock and playing cops and robbers or cowboys and indians with toy guns cause all of us old folks to become desentized?
Get a grip! There were serial murders and shocking multiple murders back then but the media was not a prevalent.
Some people are always going to be evil, souless, murdering scum and you’re not going to find any one reason why; they just are.

As a college student in the late 60s I worked in a mental institution. This was before they opened the doors and let them all out. There was a reason for those places then. And there is a reason now.

You are correct in says that they most players of these games are reasonably sane.
There’s a correlation betwen the first modern mass shooting (1980) and the time “deinstitutionalization” began to take effect. They just continued from there.

For the weak minded, yes.
True. I think in a perfect world, however one reaches that perfect world, there is no violence. Ostensibly society is moving toward that goal - utopia, or whatever. A society, or it’s rulers, that has such games, I question, is not moving toward that state, but one of mediocrity and suffering. The individuals in such a society that need such games are a reflection of the imperfections of that society.
Exactly. I was a big kid so they put me to work in a criminally insane ward. I never sat in the day room unless my back was to a wall. Aces and eights.

..... I think the answer to this does not stand with the video games alone.
...... Games may trigger certain responses and actions in a small minority of individuals. But the games alone don't do it. I believe there is a lethal concoction of events that leads to violent behavior associated with these games.
..... I really think it should also be noted that there is a large contingent of children that are misdiagnosed with ADD. If I recall correctly I believe the percentage of diagnosis is around 40% when the actual occurrence is around 3 - 5% among children. Often times a parent will consult with a doctor about the child's behavioral problems which of course could not be a result of a lack of discipline could it? < sarcasm > The Dr. then starts a prescription of meds that miraculously keeps the child's emotions from surfacing as much as they were. Heck .... it's like a miracle to the parent!
.... While under the care of their parents the children are then raised through their entire life using meds to subdue natural emotions which are not properly dealt with in the standard social and mental way. As the child grows into puberty and then adulthood the hormonal changes as well as much more complex issues of teen and adult life begin to surface in their life. However .... they have not had the opportunity to deal with even the simplest emotions thus far and it is now too late to begin doing so without proper supervision. They are now in the unenviable position of having to take the meds for the rest of their lives. To not do so will result in a massive rush of emotions that they have not had to deal with before because the meds have subdued them!!!
During these times the child may also be involved with playing the aforementioned violent video games which may be also .... the only social life that some of these children know. You've heard it before ..... He was a quiet young man that lived with his mother .... he loved his video games and kept to himself.
..... Then he decides to stop taking those stupid meds .... and his game play gets much more exciting ..... emotions are cascading into his mind in a way he hasn't felt before .........
Game Over.
Leave this one alone. People cause mass shootings, not video games or guns.

I also need to laugh at those game companies who say they have moved from the PC to console because of piracy, or delay the PC release of game X "so as to make enough money before being released to and immediately pirated on PC": The cracked version of the Xbox GTA 5 game came out the same day the real game was released.
We can ban the games and put thousands out of work, or just employ them to make games no one wants to buy, riiiiight that’s the way to do it. I’ve had my kids and grand kids playing MOH, COD, and others in the FPS mode, none of the 8 boys have had any violent confrontations with anyone, a couple them own guns too. None have ever been detained or arrested. Granted if these games are in the hands of the criminally leaning gangsta crowd, I can see where there may be a problem, by re-enforcing their already wanton attitude, since Grand Theft Auto appears to glorify crime. The games are strictly entertainment, probably why the theaters aren’t as crowded as they theses days. One can spend hours playing them over and over and find something new in them every time.
Did playing “Cowboys and Indians” when we were kids incite violence?
