Casey denounces GOP on food stamps, budget
post-gazette.com ^ | September 21, 2013 | James O'Toole

Sen. Bob Casey denounced a House measure that would cut $40 billion from the nation's food stamp program over the next decade while contending that the move was evidence that the Republican Party had been taken over by the "far, far right."

"It is wrong; it is mean-spirited ... it's especially harmful to children when we know that this program has kept, by one estimate, more than 2 million kids out of poverty and lifted more than a million and a half kids out of deep poverty," Mr. Casey said during a lunchtime news conference outside the Allegheny County Courthouse. "It's a purely kind of ideological stunt that we're seeing a lot in Washington."

The Democrat, elected last year to his second term in the Senate, contended that the House vote to cut the food stamp program, called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, was a product of an ideological pattern within the GOP that he lumped with efforts to overthrow Obamacare through threats to shut down the government or refuse to raise the nation's debt limit.

"The far right -- the far, far right -- has taken over the Republican Party in Washington and we're all going to pay a price for that ... [threatened] government shutdown, if the debt ceiling is breached, we're going to pay an economic price," he said. "One party has been taken over by extremists; we all pay a price for that."

Right, it’s “wrong” to get people off of foodstamps and into prosperity, but perfectly fine for liberals to enact policies which damage the economy and put these poor kids in poverty to begin with. Such twisted logic. No, Senator, and your fellow leftists - it is not compassionate to get more people into situations where they are in need of government assistance to feed themselves vs. policies which enable them to not need the assistance to begin with.

Where in the Constitution is it even hinted at that I should buy other peoples food through the government?

I guess I’m just “mean spirited”.

Casey is one of the worst, worthless Senators this country has ever had..
He is not his Father..and that is what he ran on...Pennsylvania is the looser for having him represent this state..

usually he is in hiding, wonder why this issue drew him out?..he sends his voters worthless form letters when we write to him, never addresses the topic...and it isn’t worth the time it takes to contact his office..

HE IS A WUSSY WIMP..

An entire 5% cut.

“Food stamp spending doubled under President Barack Obama — after doubling under his Republican predecessor, says Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla”

So cutting it back to the levels of just a year ago is ‘killing people’?

Tell you what Mr Congresscritter - dig into your own pocket, I’m tired of carrying the load for the slackers....

I don’t agree with Senator Casey, but I think it was a bad political move to make this change right now. Of all the crap that’s going on in DC, all the billions upon billions being channeled to special interests, do Republicans seriously want to fight food stamps first? It makes no sense to me, because Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) will demagogue it nonstop. We’re taking food out of the mouths of starving babies, don’t you know. Cut ethanol subsidies for example. Oh. Republicans LIKE that handout.

Time to shut this clown up. He has been a dead wood for years. When he was the auditor general he would not look into the scandal of the states loss of funds in the trust funds of the state. Over 20 billion lost. Nothing but a loser who has nothing but a name.

Busko: “Nothing but a loser who has nothing but a name.”

You could say that about so many of our “leaders” in DC. Nevertheless, the American aristocracy just keeps on getting reelected. We fought a revolution to end that sort of stuff, but some people will choose a free phone over freedom. You, too, can be a senator for life so long as you can keep the free bread (food stamps) coming.

The DNC has perfected the art of running and electing candidates, like Casey Jr, who make no waves, don't speak out of turn, do not disagree with leadership, rarely have pet issues, but are always reliable votes for the leadership.

I have noticed that the talking heads of the DNC are the same retreads over and over. You rarely see people, like Casey Jr, out front on an issue. That is to insulate them against voter backlash.

Don't get me wrong, the GOP leadership would love to have Ted Cruz and Rand Paul just shut up and follow along.

But, thanks to the Tea Party, we are making waves.

Just shut up Casey you waste of space. Yeah I live in PA so I know.
I am sick and tired of standing in line at the register and seeing people using their 200.00 smart phone while buying groceries with food stamps/card. My phone cost 14.99. You make choices in life and that is okay. I simply do not want to be responsible for paying for yours.

IMO, food stamps are just one of the largest gubmint scams there is. Give people something for nothing so they will follow you like trained pigs, the end result being you stay in power over them. Then there is free “Odumbo phones”, paid fuel/electric bills, etc. etc., The give aways seem to be working quite well since odumbo got re-elected didn’t he?
